Charnwood Local Policing Unit is working with schools and businesses in the area to install cycle tags on bicycles to help deter cycle theft. The Charnwood Community Partnership has provided the cycle tags, which when fitted to a bicycle cannot be removed. The first of these events was held on Wednesday, 9th September at Pukka Pies, The Halfcroft, Syston.
Pukka Pies Ltd at The Halfcroft is pleased to be working with the police, by enabling their staff to have the cycle tags fitted on their premises. It co-incides with the new extension at Pukka Pies, which has reduced the car parking area and increased the number of employees using their bicycles for getting to and from work. Pc 4609 Carly Adams and Police Community Support Officer, PCSO 6606 Glenn Freeman, are working with Mr Stuart Posnett, the Security Officer to have the cycle tags installed.
Pc Carly Adams, Police Beat Manager for Syston, said: “Cyclists can often make it easy for the criminals, by leaving their bicycles propped up against a wall or lying on the drive. We are working with cyclists to enable them to have the tags fitted free of charge, which will be both a deterrent and will enable the police to identify any stolen bikes. Bikes should never be left in isolated places and should always be locked if left unattended – even for a few minutes.”
Mr Stuart Posnett, Security Officer at Pukka Pies Ltd, said:
“The Data Tags have a unique code that links to the cyclist’s details on a database, which will allow the owner to be re-united with his / her bicycle when it is recovered. However, prevention is most important, so the owners need to take care of their property and the management at Pukka Pies are keen to help the staff safeguard their property.”
