jayant-mistry-at-sbc During the annual Presentation Night at Syston Men’s Bowling Club held on Saturday 7th November, Club President, Colin Grimes, invited Jayant Mistry, chief coach of the Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Club, his nominated charity for 2009, to accept a cheque for close to £500. Before becoming involved with the Cobras, Jayant was one of Britain’s leading international wheelchair tennis players, a former winner of the Wheelchair Wimbledon title, who has travelled around the world representing his country.

Colin Grimes said:  “I want to thank and congratulate all Members for their excellent support for the cause of Leicester Cobras throughout the year. Fundraising for good causes within the local community remains a key element within our Club’s annual programme of activities.

I know that the Leicester Cobras have changed the lives of many local disabled people, of all ages and both sexes, by giving them a new interest, an opportunity to make many new friends and, from participation in this fast-and-furious, physically demanding sport, to achieve great improvements in their physical fitness and mental well-being.

The Leicester Cobras are now doing so well that they have two teams in the English Wheelchair Basketball League and are hoping to start an all women team soon. They are currently raising funds to purchase a trailer to enable them to transport wheelchairs between competition venues and we hope that our contribution will help them achieve their aim.

We wish them every future success.”
