Syston in Bloom Best Front Gardens Presentation

sib-queen-vic On Monday 2nd November the presentation of the best front garden competition took place at the Queen Victoria in High Street, as members of the Syston in Bloom panel and the invited guests joined together to give and receive their prizes.

Stewart Midgely Leicester Parks and Ady Dayman had judged this event in August and were on hand to present the winners with their awards. Ady from Derry Nurseries, who are the main sponsors for the event along with the Syston Town News and Town Council, had great pleasure in presenting the certificates and prize money. First prize winner Tony Millmen received the shield, certificate and £75 voucher to spend at Derries, Roy Palmer received his certificate and voucher. Best containers winner Lorraine O’Brien was unable to attend but Sarah Bacon received her Highly Commended certificate and voucher from Ady. The Queen Victoria won the Best Community garden and also gained a Silver Gilt in the East Midlands in Bloom. Councillor Howard Midgely, chairman of the Syston town council presented them with their certificates and vouchers, see picture above. Josie Hutchinson of the Syston in Bloom panel explained that they had only been two marks away from the Gold Medal award. A fabulous tribute to all the hard work they put in to make the Queen Victoria such a wonderful array of colour during the summer.

The Judges, Stewart and Ady had created a special award that went to Graham Brown and Jerry Haxton as they do not have a front garden but had made wonderful use of containers in order to provide a secret garden effect outside their flat in High Street.

Everyone enjoyed the evening which was finished with refreshments kindly provided by The Queen Victoria. The Syston in Bloom panel hope that they can find sponsorship for next year, as although the town will not be entering the East Midlands in Bloom competition in 2010, the panel want to continue to encourage the residents to take pride in their surroundings by running the Best Front Gardens Competition. The Syston Town News has already agreed to sponsor the shield again next year, but there is a need for other businesses to provide some sponsorship. If you are interested in sponsoring the SIB competition please contact Josie Hutchinson on 0116 260 1478
