This Christmas, for the first time, Charnwood residents who subscribe to the brown bin service for garden waste will be able to take advantage of an added bonus.
If subscribers are having a real Christmas tree this year, when it’s been taken down and all the decorations removed, they can leave it out for collection alongside their brown bin in January to be taken away for composting.
Not only will this make it much easier to dispose of Christmas trees without all the mess that goes with them in the car, it will also help to contribute to Charnwood’s domestic recycling rate.
After Christmas, just leave the tree out on your normal brown bin collection day, and Charnwood Borough Council do the rest. It will take your tree to a composting facility in Lount in North West Leicestershire, where it will be composted along with all the other waste from brown bins in Charnwood and across Leicestershire.
Once these materials have broken down, the compost is used in landscape restoration projects, and is also available from the local tips in Loughborough, Sileby and Shepshed.
Residents who don’t subscribe to the brown bin service can still take their real Christmas trees to the tips, where they will also be sent for composting.
If you don’t already subscribe to the garden waste collection service, you can sign up now by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/garden waste, or by calling 01509 634 563.
Please note that the garden waste collection service will be suspended for two weeks over the Christmas period, from Friday 25th December. Normal service will resume on Friday, 8th January 2010.
