Syston has been selected to have the first of a new and innovative approach to a national problem. The Leicestershire and Rutland Primary Care Trust (PCT) is the first in the country to introduce the service with DentalXpress to provide NHS dental care for anyone in the area. They aim to provide NHS dental care for 400 people a month. The mobile units offer all the amenities expected in a normal bricks and mortar practice; they have a reception area, four treatment rooms, a disabled toilet and a staff room. Wherever possible all the dental instruments used will be disposable. It will be staffed by two to three dentists and three dental nurses and served by one receptionist who will work continuously throughout the day. There is a computer and telephone booking system, with a freephone number 0800 111 4556, and confirmations will be offered via email and text. At the official opening of the one in Syston, Amarjit Gill, a senior figure from the British Dental association and DentalXpress spokesman, explained the background to the foundation of the organisation said, “The population of the UK is rising and Primary Care Trusts are constantly looking for innovative solutions and don’t want to invest in fixed practices at a cost of £500,000 to £750,000 if the demand for dentistry does not materialize”.
Lesley Harrison from NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland PCTsaid: “We are delighted to be working with DentalXpress to bring NHS dental services to Syston in a new and innovative way. We are confident that this surgery will be well received by patients wishing to access NHS dental services and it provides a temporary solution to current problems. We will be opening a new permanent NHS practice later this year when suitable premises have been found.”
The unit is located in the car park behind the Midland Railway Public House, which gives plenty of free car parking for those wishing to use the facility. The unit is open 8.00am to 7.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 2.00pm on Saturday. For further details see the advert on page 9 of the Syston Town News or telephone the freephone number given above.
