COLOURS AND THEIR DEEPER MEANINGS

There are seven visible colours, or rays, of the spectrum – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The rays have both physical and psychological attributes. Those at the red or warm end of the spectrum are more physical and tend to express themselves outwardly and those at the blue or cool end are more psychological and tend to investigate their inner self. The warms rays of the spectrum are red, orange and yellow. Green is the middle ray and is the balance between the warm and the cool. The cool rays are blue, indigo and violet.

RED

Red is the colour of life itself, of fire, of blood and danger. Without it our lives would lack vigour, warmth, strength and passion. We need red to stimulate our nervous system, to release adrenalin and improve our circulation. We also need red to root ourselves in everyday reality and to give us a sense of security.
Too much red energy and we become over involved in the workings of the material world; too little and we find the world a threatening and dangerous place.
Red is a very powerful colour and should not be used if you suffer from high blood pressure, heart problems or if you are feeling angry or upset, as it can over stimulate.

ORANGE

Orange is created from a blend of red and yellow in equal parts. We associate orange with health and vitality. Orange is the colour of creativity and positive thinking. It stimulates and energises.
The colour orange can help you to assimilate negative feelings or come to terms with traumatic events in your life, such as the loss of someone or the break-up of a relationship. It can also be of benefit when you feel that you are in a rut and fearful of making the changes that will enable you to leave the past behind and go forward into the future. The action associated with this colour is expansion, the opening up of yourself to life, so that you can engage with it once more.
You have no need of extra orange if you are fit and well and enjoying life. Too much orange and you may become complacent or self-indulgent. Like red, orange is a strong colour and needs to be used with care.
Orange is a joyous colour. It frees and releases emotions and alleviates feelings of self-pity, lack of self-worth and unwillingness to forgive. It stimulates the mind, renewing interest in life; it is a wonderful antidepressant and lifts the spirits.

YELLOW

Yellow is a happy, bright and uplifting colour, a celebration of sunny days. The richest source of yellow is sunlight. If we exclude natural light from our lives, for whatever reason, be it work or illness, we cut ourselves off from one of the greatest sources of healing.
Mentally, it is associated with intellect and expression of thought. It therefore aids the powers of discernment and discrimination, memory and clear thinking, decision-making and good judgment and will help you focus on the task in hand and the flow of ideas. Yellow will also improve your organisational skills and the ability to see different points of view. It builds self-confidence and encourages an optimistic attitude. However, dull yellow can be the colour of fear.
Yellow should be avoided if you are feeling excitable or restless, stressed or unable to wind down. Yellow eliminates negative thoughts and feelings that can undermine your sense of self worth.
Yellow is also a good colour for children as it helps to develop their cognitive abilities. Children will benefit from a yellow playroom but not a yellow bedroom because its stimulating qualities may cause restlessness and difficulty sleeping.

GREEN

Green epitomises the qualities of equilibrium and harmony. It creates a feeling of comfort, relaxation, calm and space, lessening stress and soothing the emotions. Dark green is particularly helpful for emotional problems.
Green has a strong affinity with nature and helps us connect with the natural world. A walk in a park or the countryside will recharge your batteries and fill you with a sense of balance. We instinctively seek it out when under stress or experiencing emotional trauma by simply going for a walk.
Green is in the middle of the colour spectrum and holds the balance between the warm and cool colours. Green is probably one of the safest colours of the spectrum but it is best avoided in situations where you need to be mentally alert as it is a very relaxing colour.
If you are lacking in green energy you are likely to be emotionally out of balance, you may suffer feelings of bitterness, resentment, hostility or even hate.
When green becomes muddy and dull, it indicates decay, like fallen leaves when they return to the earth; muddy green represents the onset of demise. Lime and olive-green can have a detrimental effect on both physical and emotional health since sickly yellow and green are associated with the emotions of envy, resentment and possessiveness.

BLUE

Blue is a cool, calming colour and is associated with a higher part of the mind. It can still the mind and soothe the spirit. Looking up at a cloudless blue sky or gazing at the sea is very relaxing. It is no coincidence that when we want to ‘get away from it all’ we often choose a destination where we can gaze at limitless expanses of both sky and sea for hours on end, becoming so relaxed that we lose all sense of time passing.
Blue is the first colour of the cool colours of the spectrum and its action is opposite to that of red. Where red stimulates, expands and warms, blue calms, contracts and cools.  Blue is associated with intelligence, honesty and integrity. It inspires mental control, clarity and creativity.  When we describe someone as ‘true-blue’ we mean we can rely on him or her, as they are loyal and trustworthy.
Light and soft blue make us feel serene and relaxed and may also help to alleviate insomnia. Midnight blue has a strong sedative effect on the mind, allowing us to connect to our intuitive and feminine side. However, too much dark blue can be depressing.

INDIGO

Indigo is a powerful, psychic colour associated with the right side of the brain and stimulates intuition and imagination. It is also a strong sedative. Indigo purifies the mind, as well as the blood and frees us of the fears and anxieties that inhibit us to allow us to hear our inner voice. Like all the colours at the blue end of the spectrum, indigo helps to take us away from the mundane, to more spiritual dimensions where intuition is more important than reason and faith more important than proof.
People suffering from mental illness or SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, should avoid indigo, as it will exacerbate the condition.
Indigo is also the colour of the sky at night – a deep, dark, velvety blue, both mysterious and unfathomable. When we gaze at it, our thoughts are likely to turn inwards, causing us to ponder on the deeper meaning of life. At such times we are likely to have flashes of insight that do not come to us during the bright, busy, daylight hours.

VIOLET

Throughout history kings, royalty and senior clergy have worn violet or purple. It is the colour relating to spiritual connection and is worn within religions across the world today. Violet is the highest colour of the spectrum and it has a very calming effect.
Violet consists of both blue and red and because of this; it helps to balance both ends of the colour spectrum. The warm colours are associated with the masculine energy and the cool with the feminine, so violet can help to bring these two energies into balance within a person.
Violet vibrates at the highest frequency of all the colours and so it stimulates the highest expression of the human spirit and together with indigo aids in the development of spiritual awareness and psychic sensitivity.
Violet and purple are colours of transformation at a very deep level; bringing peace and combating shock or fear. They have a cleansing effect in emotional disturbances. They are also connected with artistic and musical impulses, mystery and sensitivity to beauty and high ideals, stimulating creativity, inspiration, sensitivity, spirituality and compassion. Violet can exert strong psychic influences. Purple is associated with psychic protection.
Indigo, violet and purple can deeply affect the mind and these colours have been used in psychiatric care to help calm and pacify patients suffering from a number of mental and nervous disorders. These colours balance the mind and also help transform obsessions and fears.
