NEW BARKBY WI
Mrs Jan Hutton, President, welcome everyone to the first formal meeting of New Barkby W.I. of 2010.
Member Mrs Pat King passed away recently and a minutes silence was observed in her memory.
New member Mrs Lyn Linney was welcomed into the institute by Mrs Hutton.
The speaker was Mrs Pat Wadd of Queniborough, who brought along a variety of small antique items for members to identify, in the form of a quiz. What looked like a giant wooden mushroom darner was an old potato masher. Other items included a decorative chain, used for pinning up long skirts and a porcelain cup was really a candle snuffer. Answers were given out at the end of the talk. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs A Wright.
The competition for ‘an old teaspoon’ was won by Mrs V Cobb, who was also presented with New Barkby’s trophy for scoring the highest number of points for competitions in 2009.
Mrs R Foster won the raffle prize and Mrs J Goulden and Mrs B Lancaster were tea hostesses.
Recently a social evening was held to launch a CD of poems, prose and sketches performed by members and recorded at Barkby’s hall in Maiden Street, Syston, before it was sold. Mr John Montague produced the CD and at the end of the evening entertained members with some of his own songs and guitar music.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd March in Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm when Mr Mark Gamble will present ‘Our Vic’ a Leicestershire Sailor. Visitors are always welcome.
