‘Our Vic’ the story of a Leicestershire Sailor was the subject of the March meeting given by Mr Mark Gamble of Wigston. This is a story about the life of his great uncle Vic, who was a Thurmaston man.
Through his talk and power point presentation, Mark built up the life of Vic through family history and recollections from friends who knew him. He was sent to HMS Pembroke at Chatham, Kent and after training, worked on a mine-laying vessel around the islands of Scotland. After being sent back to Chatham, he worked on HMS Volunteer, a destroyer. Later Vic went to the Azores and n 1942 volunteered to go to New York, before working on a ship taking troops to Sicily. The ship was torpedoed and unfortunately Vic lost his life at the early age of twenty five years. Today his name is listed on the memorial monuments at Thurmaston and Chatham.
To end the talk, Mark showed slides of the Royal Navy and personnel while members listened to the song sung by Rod Stewart ‘sailing’. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs Mary Gamble.
Mrs June Bishop won the competition of a fob watch. Mrs Catherine Grant won the raffle prize and Mrs Rosemary Foster and Mrs Janet Cross were the tea hostesses.
The next meeting will be on 7th April in Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm and will include a talk on ice cream. All visitors are most welcome.
