New Barkby W.I. April Meeting

Farmer Mr Brian Dalby of Rugby visited New Barkby W.I. for their meeting in April. From his herd of Friesian dairy cattle, Mr Dalby diversified into making diary ice cream in 1987. Everything is derived from a natural source. All ingredients are put into a stainless steel tank, pasteurised to a certain temperature, cooled, transferred to another tank to cool down, then flavours are added when the ice cream is at the freezer stage of its process.
The dairy farm has to have a licence to produce ice cream, the labelling on the lid states size of container and ingredients and the number code means that the product can be traced back to the manufacturer
This ice cream is mostly sold in small size shops and farm shops, and could not keep up the demand for large scale supermarkets.
One of the flavours used is Christmas Pudding, which is a popular one during the festive season. Unfortunately, there was none of that to taste during the evening, but members were able to taste several other varieties, including ginger, strawberry, vanilla and even an apple crumble. We all had to be quick as the ice cream started to melt in the warm atmosphere of the room.
Mrs C Grant gave the vote of thanks. Mrs B Gamble won the competition for an ice cream recipe. The raffle was won by Mrs K Sharp, and the tea hostesses were Mrs G Baker and Mrs B Gamble.
During the evening we welcomed Mrs Janice Webbon as a new member. The May meeting to be held on Wednesday the 5th will be the Resolution meeting. Visitors are always welcome at Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm.
