With the cricket season now in full swing, Syston Town CC can look forward to yet another successful season on and off the pitch. No doubt the residents of Syston are aware of the club’s sensational signing of Saqlain Mushtaq. For those who are not, Mushtaq has played 49 test matches and 169 one day internationals for Pakistan. He has 208 test wickets, 288 one day wickets, and in an 11 year career at Surrey claimed the wicket of 833 batsman – in other words he is a pretty good spin bowler! He is most famous for the bowling delivery known as the “Doosra” which has caught out many batsmen. At the time of writing Saqlain has already taken 10 wickets in just 2 games for Syston Town and already caused a stir across teams in Leicestershire. Syston Town are by no means a one man club with notable performances across all teams. But it cannot be ignored the magnitude of Saqlain’s arrival. The club hopes that the people of Syston will turn out in force to support not only a test legend, but for all of the Syston Town senior teams. Our first home game attracted over 200 people and we hope that these numbers can be continued throughout 2010.Off the field the club continues to make huge step forwards. After completing our five year club plan, Syston now have one of the best grounds in the county. The ground is kept looking in splendour thanks to the efforts of groundsman Ken Cooper, whilst the bar is continued to be professionally ran by club stalwart Brian Sutliff. Younger committee members in the form of Peter Short and Ivan Spibey ensure that the marketing and the relations of the club are as good as they can be, whilst chairman John Fraser and Treasurer Roger Pole keep the club on a stable footing and heading in the right direction.Indeed Syston Town have now joined the 21st century by now having a superb website thanks to committee member Peter Short and his company, ‘I Design and Publish’. The website has the very latest news and views at Syston Town Cricket Club as well as offering information on the players and the latest match photography. There are also exciting plans for a club shop for all your cricket equipment needs and even Syston Town TV! Visit www.systontowncc.com to see what all the fuss is about!Social events are essential to keep any sports club going and Syston are no different. Syston have attracted additional players in 2010 but we want to see as many locals as possible enjoying this great sport. The club run youth teams from under 11s to under 17s. There are also 3 senior sides which cater for the likes of Saqlain Mushtaq, to those who don’t know which end of the bat to hold!
