Don’t forget to pack your EHIC

Holidaymakers preparing to jet off to Europe this summer are being reminded by the NHS in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to make sure they pack their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).The free card offers travellers access to reduced cost medical treatment and can prevent EU citizens who are visiting Europe from being hit with a large medical bill. Those visiting Europe are being urged to apply for, or check, that their EHIC is still in date, as well as being reminded that the card is not a substitute for travel insurance.People can apply for themselves, as well as their partner and children, and will need to supply details of NHS or National Insurance numbers, as well as personal details for each applicant. An EHIC is valid for up to five years and travellers can apply for a new one up to six months before the expiry date.Applications can be made online by visiting https://www.ehic.org.uk or by calling 0845 606 2030 or picking up a form available at some post offices.
