On Wednesday 14th July a meeting of the Syston Royal British Legion Branch was held to hear that the sale of the club had fallen through as the party purchasing it not being able to proceed due to a lack of funds.
The Legion fighting fund had been contacted by the Royal British Legion head office and asked if they would be interested in proceeding with their purchase of the club. This was obviously difficult because after the last meeting when the fund was told that they had been unsuccessful, their backers had used the money promised on another venture. They asked for some time, which was given although very limited. They have managed to secure another backer who is willing to purchase the club and keep it as a members club and give the Syston Royal British Legion Branch free use of the club for all their activities.
This is welcome news to all those who wish to have the branch were it currently is and for it to continue all its activities in the knowledge that the club will be kept in good repair. The property has been valued at £360,000 and the financial backers have offered the RBL head office £480,000 which will ensure the staff remain in jobs and the branch will have a home for the foreseeable future.
At the time of going to press no confirmation of the bid being accepted has been received, but hopefully we can report this in the next issue.
