Members and friends of Wreake Valley Rotary Club journeyed to Normandy to take part in a sponsored walk in aid of Help For Heroes and Troop Aid. The project took place over the weekend of the 5th and 6th June, the 66th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. The 25 mile walk started at Arromanche and followed the coast around to the famous Pegasus Bridge, a distance of roughly 25 miles.
Organiser Nigel Coleman said “this was something I had had in mind to do for a little while, both Help for Heroes and Troop Aid give great assistance to wounded service personnel and there is much ongoing need for them. The walk, whilst a little daunting, was tremendous fun and we were blessed by good weather and there was a real feeling of pride and remembrance of the past in every town and village we passed through, we completed the walk over one evening and six hours of the following day, this allowed us time to visit some of the sites made during that period of WW2, in particular the American Cemetery at Omaha was deeply moving. The money is still being collected, but it looks like we will exceed £4,000, a great result and a big thank you to all those who sponsored us.”
