The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in Syston and Surrounding Villages

Syston Charity Festival

Saturday 2nd June

Syston and District Chamber of Trade present A Family Friendly Event in celebration of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
A range of local craft and food stalls.
A fun packed day with competitions for all the family include a royal themed decorated cake competition for ladies, a royal themed hat/crown for the children and a tug of war for the men. Prizes for all winners! So get your entries in, see below for details.
A Large entertainment stage will feature a whole host of music throughout the day, commencing with peel of St Peter and St Paul’s Church bells.
The line up at time of going to print is as follows: Two School choirs, Syston Brass Band, Vocalists, Jennifer Henry and Sinead Wells, Dance displays from Triple Theatre Academy, QDC and Zumba Live. SARIC, Gardeners Question Time, Bands include Dream, Velocity, Apache John, The Left Hand Band, Deviant Amps plus Johnny B Disco.
One highlight of the day is a Spitfire fly past courtesy of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
To sign up for the tug of war, teams of five required at just £15 per team, or enter the royal themed decorated cake competition £2 per cake, visit the website or look out for forms/fliers around Syston during May.
Children please bring your royal themed hat or crown with you and we will judge these during the day with the winners being announced in the afternoon of the Festival. Prizes for all competition winners!

Thurmaston’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Thurmaston have events planned from Wednesday 30th May through to a finale on Monday 4th June.
Monday 4th June
1.00pm to 5.00pm
On Elizabeth Park Sports & Community Centre, Checkland Road LE4 8fFN
Stalls and attractions, kiddies fairground rides, all manner of food stalls and field events which include ‘It’s a Carnival Knockout’. This wacky event for the over 16’s promises loads of laughs as teams of four pit their wits against each other, so get together your team, could be friends, workmates or family, at just £10 per team you won’t regret it, Tel 0116 220 0698. Also at the carnival will be a very special display from Leicester Speedway and a boxing display from Thurmaston’s very own Boxing Club.
The Cemetery Chapel will also be open with a display by the Heritage Group. This is a great opportunity to look inside this stunning Victorian Chapel, chat to group members and pick up a copy of the groups books Memories of Thurmaston vol’s 1 & 2.
To round off this amazing weekend of events will be the lighting of a Giant Sparkler especially for her Majesty. The finale of this Jubilee Spectacular weekend will take place on Monday evening on Garden Street Recreation Ground  – don’t miss this spectacular end to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Thurmaston.

Barkby’s  Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Monday 4th June

The church bells will ring to open the days events and the church service to follow at St Mary’s church. A display of children’s art will be shown in the  church along with a mosaic.
There will be a scarecrow competition which will be on display at various points in the village. A children’s fancy dress competition with a royal theme is also planned for the day.
In the afternoon villagers and guests are invited to have a picnic at the cricket ground, were games will be organized for the children followed by the cutting of the jubilee cake and a toast to the queen.
The hiss and boo band will be playing at the cricket pavilion from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Admission by ticket price £5.00. The days events will be ended with the lighting of the beacon at 10.30pm followed by a magnificent firework display.
It is intended that every child under 16 years old in the village will be presented with a diamond jubilee mug.
To coincide with these celebrations, The Malt Shovel are holding a beer festival, with live music on Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th June.

Saric Musical Evenings
Friday 15th and Saturday 16th June

The Old Chapel in Syston.
In celebration of the Queens Diamond Jubilee SARIC are holding two musical evenings spanning 60 years.  The evenings will bring together all your old favourites and audience participation will be encouraged.
So if you fancy a sing or just want to listen please come and help us celebrate.
Tickets £7 are available from Sally on 0116 2606095. Refreshments will be on sale and you will be seated cabaret style. All proceeds from the evenings will go to the refurbishment of the Old Chapel. SARIC is a registered charity no.1111557.
