President Shirley Franklin welcomed New Barkby members to their August meeting.
The speaker for the evening was Mr Richard Adams of Oakham and his talk was titled ‘Travels with a camera’. He showed photographs on a screen with his commentary and music, as members were transported to Iceland for his daughter’s wedding and the scenery around the local area, with waterfalls and geysers. The second section was of images taken around Rutland, including shots of twisted tree trunks, motor tyre marks in the snow and cobwebs taken on a misty morning with temperatures as low as -12º.
We were then taken to warmer climes with a look at the sights and sounds of Morocco, with the market place in Marrakesh and lots of colourful goods for sale, followed by the garden of Majorelle with a vast display of Cacti.
To end the talk, the last few slides were of flora and fauna, often in close-up, taken in various locations.
The vote of thanks was given by Mrs P Warren and the competition for an item beginning with ‘R’ was won by Mrs M Gamble who had decorated a box with various coloured ribbons with labels attached for a particular event or occasion.
The raffle was won by Mrs P Smith and the tea hostesses were Mrs C Iliffe and Mrs M Muddimer.
The next meeting will be on the 5th September when the talk will be ‘The Work of the Samaritans’. The competition will be for an item beginning with the letter ‘K’.
Visitors are always welcome to our meetings at Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm.
