Urban Play Festival 2012

We have a fantastic selection of plays this year to really show off the talents of our members here at Urban Young Actors. We believe we are home to the best young actors that Leicester has to offer and have a very varied theatre programme this year to suit all tastes!

So here they are…

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, adapted by Kathryn Schultz Miller.

Friday 28th September and Saturday 29th September. Performed by the under 12’s group.
On a golden afternoon, young Alice follows a White Rabbit, who disappears down a nearby rabbit hole. Quickly following him, she tumbles into the burrow and enters the merry, topsy-turvy world of Wonderland! Whimsical escapades highlight Alice’s journey, which culminates in a madcap encounter with the Queen of Hearts and the ever-submissive King Clifford!! A classic play with an Urban twist!

Headstrong by April De Angelis.

Friday 12th October and Saturday 13th October. Barkby 2.00pm to 4.00pm group.
As a result of her mother’s actions Rose Phillips has been sent to work for the upper class Lowe family. Captain Lowe is a partner in the new opium clipper trade. His partner, Mr Logan, looks after the Indian side of the business, buying opium in India which Captain Lowe then ships to China in the clipper ‘Sea Witch’. The marriage of his daughter Lila Mae to Mr Logan would cement a business dynasty, if only Lila wasn’t so headstrong…..

Dust by Sarah Daniels.

Friday 2nd November and Saturday 3rd November. Perfomed by the city 5.00pm to 7.00pm group.
A school trip travelling on the London Underground escalates into something much more. With the help of time-travel, Flavia is transported back to the Roman Empire and discovers a new found gladiatorial strength! This play explores the themes of teenage bullying and self-empowerment.

The Riots by Gillian Slovo

Friday 16th November and Saturday 17th November. Performed by the over 16’s group.
An award winning new play gaining 4*’s from The Mail, The Guardian and Time Out to name a few. When the Government originally refused a Public Inquiry into the riots that shook our cities last Summer, the Tricycle Theatre mounted its own. From tweets by rioters, to moment-by-moment accounts by riot police, ‘The Riots’ builds a real-time picture of events as they unfolded. From interviews with politicians, police, teachers, lawyers, community leaders, as well as victims and on-lookers, this play analyses what happened and why it happened. Real life astonishing stories and equally astonishing conclusions told by the many voices that were stirred up by the riots. This play is in conjunction with Fourmost Films and features film footage as well as live acting.

Dracula by Bram Stoker, Adapted by David Calcutt.

Friday 30th November and Saturday 1st December. Performed by the Barkby 12.00 to 2.00pm group.
He is Nosferatu, the undead. He can walk through locked doors, change his shape. Sometimes he looks like a man, sometimes a huge wolf-like dog, or a bat. He never grows ill, never tires. And if you invite him into your home, he will take your life and your soul… Bram Stokers thrilling classic is brought to life following Jonathan Harker’s journey from his first encounter with the count until his last! An eerie end to the festival and one not for the faint hearted!

Please do bear in mind that by attending any one of our plays you are supporting the development of these wonderful young actors and are helping the group to be able to work on future projects that will continue to enhance their talent, creativity and confidence. Recently some of our members have had the opportunities to work on feature films, short films, professional theatre and voice-over for video games. Long may we be in a position to provide these exciting opportunities for our young people!
