1181 Squadron Support Wings Appeal

The 15th September is always of great importance to air cadets across the country and this year was no exception especially for a group of air cadets from 1181, Syston Squadron. Over the course of the weekend, they stepped in to help out the Leicester branch of the Royal Air Force Association, RAFA.

On the morning of Saturday 15th September, a group of the air cadets met with 1181, Syston Squadron Adjutant, Pilot Officer Daniel McGlynn RAFVR(T), and RAFA Leicester branch members at the clock tower in Leicester to collect for the Wings Appeal, an annual appeal to help raise money for the RAFA charity, which provides support to ex-service personnel and their families. However, the squadron didn’t stop there in showing their support as the Officer Commanding of 1181, Syston Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Andrew Kenyon RAFVR(T), met with a group of the air cadets in Syston to also raise money for the Wings Appeal.

After a busy day of collecting money in both Syston and Leicester, the air cadets had managed to raise a fantastic £308.71, helping take the Leicester RAFA branch closer to beating their Wings Appeal record. A week earlier, air cadets and staff from 1181, Syston Squadron and 1461, Wigston Squadron joined with the Leicester RAFA branch at the ‘Our Leicester’ day, helping them raise further money and raise awareness of the Wings Appeal.

The whole squadron then met on Sunday 16th September with RAFA Leicester branch members and other air cadet units to parade through the streets of Leicester to commemorate the Battle of Britain and remember the few. Officer Commanding 1181, Syston Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Andrew Kenyon RAFVR(T) commented, “We are very proud to be able to help out the RAFA Leicester branch. After they adopted the squadron earlier in the year, it’s fantastic to be able to keep close links with them and for the cadets to get an opportunity to interact with the members whilst supporting such an important and worthwhile cause.”

1181 Squadron meet on a Monday and Thursday from 7.00pm to 9.30pm and are based in the ATC hut in the grounds of Wreake Valley College. We are actively recruiting new members and any interested parties should contact Flight Lieutenant Kenyon on [email protected]
