Spotlight on Syston Town Council

SPOTLIGHT – THE JOURNAL FOR SYSTON TOWN COUNCIL

Remembrance Sunday
Remembrance Sunday is the day to remember all those who have given their lives for peace and freedom which we enjoy today.
A parade through Syston Town was followed by a service at the War Memorial held on Sunday 11th November 2012 which, was well attended. Wreaths of poppies were placed on the Cenotaph and 2 minutes silence was held at 11.00am to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women.

New Council Members
Three new Councillors have been co-opted onto the Council.
Mrs Valerie Henshaw was co-opted onto New Barkby Ward. She has lived in Syston since the 1960’s and is very interested in what facilities are being provided for the Community. Having worked in Commerce for years she is interested in how the money is spent on behalf of the local council tax payer.
Mrs Elizabeth Mott was co-opted onto St Peter’s East Ward. She is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner and has a long standing interest in community, health, safety and environmental affairs.
Mr Garry Rayns was co-opted onto St Peter’s West Ward. He has lived in Syston for the last 15 years and would like to be given the chance to put something back into the area he lives, and in some way help to shape and develop its future.

Christmas MarketMayor receives flowers
A Speciality Christmas Market was held on Saturday 8rd December 2012 on Central Park in Syston with over 30 stalls. The market was the perfect way for families to begin their Christmas celebrations. Festive food included roast chestnuts, home-made pies, cakes and old English toffee and fudge. Alongside the many food stalls were unique handcrafted gifts, many made in the local area. The weather was very kind this year and we enjoyed a lovely sunny day following adverse weather conditions in the week leading up to the event. The Mayor of Charnwood Cllr. diane wise accompanied by her consort husband Harold, enjoyed walking through the market and talking to the stall holders she also enjoyed listening to young singer and winner of Wreake Valley Academy’s got talent Grace Longland. Our picture here shows Cllr Wise receiving a basket of flowers from panel chair Cllr. Josie Branston after thier lunch in the Syston Bolws Club.
An entertainment programme was organised throughout the day by Mrs F. Henry, event’s panel member which was held on a professional stage. This included singers, dancers, hand bells, brass band, morris dancers and a children’s entertainer.
The younger children enjoyed the fair rides together with visiting Santa in his Grotto. A crowd of people arrived for the Santa Parade in the late afternoon with Syston Brass Band and the Morris Dancers giving a display.
The finale to the day was the switch on of the Christmas lights followed by a dazzling professional firework display, see gallery below.

Lantern Parade
The popular children’s Lantern Parade which was due to be held on Friday 14th December 2012 was cancelled due to torrential rain.
However about 5 or 6 families turned up at the meeting point were welcomed with hot drinks provided by the Bowls Club members and they enjoyed singing a few carols while staying warm and dry in the Bowls Club. PC Melody and PCSO Freeman were in attendance.
