Resident, Shirley Franklin welcomed members to the first meeting of 2013.
From our Bring and Buy Sale and Donations in lieu of pending Christmas cards to each other, members were able to donate £60.00 towards Ann Taylors Charity ‘Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research’, which has been acknowledged.
As our scheduled speaker was unable to attend, due to incapacity, members enjoyed an evening of Flower Arranging, with Madeleine Loftus, who made up four arrangements with a theme of ‘Looking Towards Spring’. The first, to remind everyone of Candlemas, consisted of white candles, twisted hazel, laurel and yellow holly and tulips.
‘St Valentines Day’, a heart shaped framework, complete with red roses.
‘Towards Easter’, palm and aspidistra leaves with white lillies.
‘Dutch Art Influence’, a variety of flowers to make up colours as if in a painting. Bottle brush stems, mahonia, dark red lillies and berries, tulips and daffodils. This was a huge arrangement to complete the demonstration.
Raffle prizes of the arrangements were won by the following ladies, P Warren, R Foster, A Montague and J Hutton, who also gave the ‘Vote of Thanks’.
There was no competition this month. Winner of New Barkby’s Cup was won by Mrs M Gamble who scored the most points from the 2012 entries.
Refreshments provided by Mrs J Brutnall and Mrs R Foster.
