Syston QT Celebrates Sixty Years

Syston QT Theatre Group is sixty years old this year!!!! Yes, it was formed in 1953 and has presented two plays each year since then. For many years the plays were staged in Birstall before moving on to the Wreake Valley College stage. When the then, Theatre Club acquired the lease on The Old Chapel, Chapel Street, Syston, getting on for 20 years ago, this venue was used for rehearsals. After some time a makeshift stage was made and some productions were performed at the chapel. The big step forward came when they purchased a de-mountable stage. The Chapel has now become their only venue for performing plays. The venue became even more pertinent since the charity, ‘Syston Arts and Recreation’ was formed in 2002, and raised money to purchase the premises. The QT’s are affiliated to SARIC and support them in raising funds to maintain and improve the building.

It is quite a small venue with a seating capacity of 60. Remarks from the core, regular audience indicate that they love the pleasant and friendly atmosphere created, and delight in the variety of plays put on. Our actors enjoy the intimate nearness of the audience and always enjoy the challenge of adapting plays to suit the limited size of the stage. The photographs show the completed stage for the last production – ‘Third Week in August’ by Peter Gordon, and QT members.

WE ARE NOW WANTING TO RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS.

There are many activities required to put on a play – acting, directing, prompting, set building, set design, properties, front of house, stage management lighting, sound, publicity. Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Social events are organised throughout the year for members and partners and stalwart Friends of the QT’s. It really is a rewarding and enjoyable hobby. So, if you are 18 – 80 years old this could be a worthwhile spare time occupation for you.

To give you a taste of what you could be missing we are holding an open afternoon on Sunday 14th July from 2.00pm to 6.00pm, when you will be able to experience some of the activities and meet present members who will be delighted to answer any questions you might have Don’t be shy, PLEASE COME ALONG – there will be refreshments!!!!
