Syston Library’s picture shows a group of parents and children enjoying World Book Day.
Imagine going online or visiting your favourite bookshop to borrow all of the books and films you want. Well, you can do this at Leicestershire County Libraries and it is FREE to join and FREE to borrow books.
Libraries have, in the past, been perceived as dark and dull with librarians telling people to “Shhhh”: this is no longer the case. Our libraries are centres of knowledge with helpful and friendly staff, providing in addition to books, a wealth of information, learning services, activities and events.
A pirate, Snow White and a dragon were just some of the characters toddlers dressed up as to attend a special Wriggly Readers storytime held at Syston library recently to mark World Book Day, a global celebration of books and reading. Regular Wriggly Readers sessions are held fortnightly on a Thursday morning from 10.00am to 10.30am, where under five’s accompanied by their parents/carers can join in with stories, songs and rhymes in a friendly environment.
For older children regular events are held during the school holidays. Tuesday 15th April sees the return of the ever popular Bedtime Stories. Children aged four to eight and their families are invited to Syston Library from 6.00pm to 7.00pm for stories, crafts, milk and cookies – don’t forget to wear your pyjamas and take your ted! Tickets cost £1 and must be booked in advance.
If you are interested in researching your family history but are unsure where to start, Syston Library offers a taster session aimed at people with little or no experience of researching family history but some experience of using computers and the internet, highlighting useful online resources such as Find My Past and Ancestry, which are free to use in libraries. The next taster will be held on Friday 4th April from 10.00am to 11.30am, the cost per person is £3 and places need to be booked in advance.
Finally, for a friendly chat and a cup of coffee pop along to the recently introduced Coffee Mornings @ Syston Library, taking place on the first Friday of the month, 4th April, between 10.00am to 12.00noon: meet friends, have a chat and find out what the library has to offer.
