After months of busy rehearsals, Syston Scout and Guide Band performed their annual variety show, ‘Sticks & Tones’ in front of an audience of around 300 people at Wreake Valley Academy on Saturday 1st March 2014.
It was the band’s 10th anniversary show and was performed by a cast of 33 members of the band, ranging in age from seven to 61 years. Included within the cast were eight new recruits who had joined the band at the start of December.
The show was opened with a traditional fanfare played by the band’s buglers who were then joined on stage by the rest of the band to perform ‘Bladen Races’ – one of their favourite pieces.
As well as music, there was a drill routine and a number of comedy sketches based on work from some of the band’s favourite comedians. Special guests, 5th Leek & District Scout & Guide Band also took part in the show.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the show and many of the audience said that it was “the best one so far!” Work will start on material for the 2015 show later in the year.
In the meantime, the band have got a busy year ahead of them taking part in a number parades and playing at various galas, fetes and other local events. They will also be entering a number of marching band competitions around the country.
