New Barkby W I

Mrs B. Saunders, president, welcomed New Barkby WI members to its July Meeting.Mrs Pauline Wainwright of Loughborough, gave an insight into ‘Life on the Canals’; she and her husband own a motor boat, so are frequently out on the water. After a quiz on cans, there was a Powerpoint presentation with excellent photographs taken by Mrs. Wainwright of particular points of interest between Loughborough and Leicester starting from Bishop Meadow Lock. Pillings Lock, which is a flood lock, is open between March and October, to prevent Loughborough from flooding, and next to it there is a flood defence. Onwards, the journey to Leicester passed through the picturesque countryside along the Grand Union Canal, until reaching Watermead Country Park and Castle Gardens, not forgetting various tea-rooms en route.
Mrs V. Cobb gave the vote-of-thanks and also won the competition for the letter ‘N’. The raffle was won by Mrs K. Fryman.
Tea Hostesses were Mrs M. Hegginson and Mrs J. Hutton. At the June Social evening, President, Mrs B. Saunders demonstrated Aromatherapy to the members who attended the evening. After a session of hand-massage, working in twos, there were strawberries and cream and shortbread biscuits to conclude the evening. The vote-of thanks for this was given by Mrs A. Montague.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 6th August at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Anne Halsey ‘California Here I Come’.
All meetings take place at syston Community Centre. Visitors are welcome to attend.
