Syston In Bloom

SIB Spotlight image
Syston has once again entered the East Midlands in Bloom Competition this year with the judging taking place on 10th July. A great deal of hard work has been put in from the council staff and the In Bloom Committee who rely heavily on volunteers for planting up the flowers. The colourful and beautiful hanging baskets that have transformed the town have been kindly sponsored by the retailers. Many residents put a lot of time and effort into their front gardens every year, and these will be judged on 23rd July. A 2015 calendar is underway as a result of a children’s photographic competition organised by Syston in Bloom.

Little Explorer’s Play Area

A new modern play area will replace and transform the exiting playground at Archdale Street Park, and the work is due to commence in the next few months. The design will provide an exciting environment for youngsters to play safely with an area being kept free for a kick-about. This project will provide residents and visitors with a more enjoyable place to spend time.

Adult Recreational Equipment

A suggested place for the new adult recreational equipment is in front of the play area near to the footpath on Central park. The Council are in the process of applying for a grant support from the Borough Council for this project.

Renewal of Central Park Notices
Some of the signs on Central Park have been reported to have faded and were difficult to read; it has been agreed to replace all of these signs and to add the wording of ‘Village Green 79’ to the new signage.

Councillor Vacancies
Syston Town Council has an establishment of 20 town councillors and manages a community centre, four parks, a cemetery, allotments and a sports field and pavilion. There is currently one vacancy for a Councillor in the New Barkby Ward. If you are over eighteen years of age, interested in local affairs, and can spare a few hours each month you may be interested in applying to be co-opted onto Syston Town Council.

Christmas Event 2014
Last year’s Christmas event proved to be a huge success with many compliments from residents and stall holders. Each year we try to improve on it and make it bigger and better than the previous one.
This year it will be held on Saturday 6th December from 11.30am until 5.30pm on Central Park. A speciality market selling food, drink, crafts and gifts will line the edge of the park with a central stage hosting a variety of entertainment.
This year we have a celebrity guest appearance from Sally Barker, who was a finalist on this year’s ‘The Voice’. Sally is a local celebrity who originates from Barrow-Upon-Soar. A Santa Parade will follow together with the Christmas light switch-on. The Grande finale will be another fantastic performance from the professional firework company which we have used over the last few years. Anyone wishing to have a stall at this event please contact Ursula on 0116 260 7150 or email: [email protected]
