Dear Editor

Thank you to Kathleen and Brian Summerfield.
The volunteers at The Syston & District Volunteer Centre do a really wonderful job. As she has now retired we would like to publicly express our thanks to Kathleen Summerfield and Bryan for all they have done for the people both in Syston and the 27 local villages.
Kathleen was the Chairman of Syston & District Volunteer Centre for over seven years and during that time she coped with very serious personal health issues, whilst, at the same time, working tirelessly unpaid seven days a week at the Centre. She was often seen working at the Centre at weekends, sorting out the ever increasing paperwork and organising the work for the following week.
When she agreed to become Chair of the Charity there was one minibus and one project – the Social Car project. By April 2014, under her stewardship, there were two Peugeot Partners and five minibuses including two new Mercedes Sprinter minibuses.
There were many active Projects including Gardening, Handyman, Advice & Advocacy, Bereavement Support, Befriending, Community Lunch, Mobility Aids, Social Car, minibus trips, ‘Listening Ear’ Service etc. Local groups were supported with transport, advice and volunteers. She gave everyone her personal phone number and was available 24/7 to try to ensure that no one felt abandoned or alone.
She scrutinised every contract and invoice to ensure accuracy and best value. She continued year on year to spend prudently and wisely whilst managing shrinking council funding. At the same time she ensured that people’s needs continued to be met.
Her sole aim throughout was to help to meet as many of the unmet needs of the local community as possible, with the help and support of many wonderful volunteers, and she has left the Centre in a very secure financial situation.
We would like again to say, on behalf of all those she has helped, ‘Thank You.’
Leicestershire County Councillor Dave Houseman
Charnwood Borough Councillor Tom Barkley.
