New Barkby WI

President Mrs B. Saunders, welcomed members of New Barkby WI to its January meeting, the first formal meeting for several years. She wished everyone a Happy New Year. A one-minute silence was held, in memory of former member, Mrs Violet Whittaker, who recently passed away.
After business matters were attended to, members spent a relaxing evening listening to speaker, Mr Norman Harrington, offering some serious and not-so-serious renditions of poetry, some of his own composition and some by other poets, such as John Betjeman. He was accompanied by Mr Alistair Barber, who had brought along his electronic keyboard to play music that matched in with the theme of each poem. One example was ‘Exercise after Christmas’ with calypso music to follow – very appropriate for January, after eating lots of festive food.
The vote of thanks was given by Mrs A. Wright. The competition letter for 2015 spelt out the words W.I. Centenary, as the National Federation of Women’s Institutes celebrates its one hundredth anniversary this year.
The competition winner was Mrs V. Cobb with a model of a Witch on a Broomstick. The raffle prize winner was Mrs J. Goulden and the Tea Hostesses were Mrs J. Goulden and Mrs M. Sewell. There was to social event in January. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th February at 7.30pm at Syston Community Centre. The speaker will be Felicity Austin on ‘The Life and Times of Jane Austen’. Visitors are welcome to attend.
