Syston Youth Café
Many will have observed the building work to the corner of the Methodist Church Centre on High Street. This modification has created a new entrance to what we call The Hub. We hope that over time the Hub will become a new community heart of Syston and surrounding areas.
This is the culmination of about three years work by a team of volunteers from the Methodist Church that has included going out in the evenings with flasks of hot chocolate and biscuits to talk to young people, to establish what facilities they would like available in Syston, as well as a team of people overseeing the building project. We were told that unless you enjoy organised sports or ‘uniformed’ activities there is very little for young people to do and nowhere to go in the evening, so they gather in the parks, car parks and wander the streets in all weathers.
We were told that the young people of Syston would like somewhere to meet and hangout with friends. The Hub will initially open one night a week (Friday) from early June as a youth café with wifi, music and other activities, the opening hours will increase according to demand. We have gained funding for trained youth workers to be available each night to work with and talk to the young people and they will be supported by a team of volunteers. The youth workers have already been out and about in Syston and surrounding villages to meet the young people in the parks and other areas they congregate and arranged some activities for them.
We are excited at the prospect that this will provide a welcoming, fun and importantly a safe area for young people as well as providing parents the reassurance that their children are in a safe place run by experienced, trained youth workers. If you feel that you would like to support this project as a volunteer, please contact Margaret on 0116 260 8320. Training will be given and police checks will be required.
Our dream is that The Hub will become a thriving meeting place for young and old as it develops into a community hub, open all day.
Syston Methodist Church is holding its Summer Gala on Saturday 20th June from 10.00am to 4.00pm, it will have a summer holiday theme and will provide the fun of the seaside (without the sea!) in Syston. There will be lots to occupy the children with including side shows and games and there will be something to suit the older person with craft stalls, holiday books, cakes and more. Throughout the day there will be morning coffees, lunches afternoon teas and ice creams served in our new café. Entry is free so come along and support this fun event for all the family.
We hope to hold an evening barbecue on Saturday 20th June in the café and newly opened outside space, so look out for posters advertising this.
Our picture shows Josie Hutchinson cutting the ribbon with Rev’d Dave Warnock left, when the new ‘Hub’ was handed over to the church.
