New Barkby WI

President, Mrs B Saunders welcomed members to the New Barkby’s May meeting. Future plans for events for the institute were discussed with members offering suggestions to provide different items of Interest, particularly for social evenings and visits to a variety of venues.
Member, Sarika Patel, was successful in a recent draw to represent New Barkby at Buckingham Palace Garden Party, in June, to celebrate one hundred years of the WI movement. We send her our best wishes for a happy occasion.
Mrs Alma Wright, a WI advisor, who is also a member, stepped in at short notice, when the planned speaker was unable to attend. The resolution to be put before the centenary annual general meeting, in London, in June was that:- “This meeting calls on HM Government to remove the distinction between nursing care and personal care in the assessment of the needs of individuals, in order to advance Health and Well-being.”
A debate ensued, with members stating their own points-of-view. The vote was a majority result, against the Resolution, because of complex issues involved and implications of various factor’s. Thank you to Mrs Wright for leading members through the only resolution to be discussed at the AGM.
In April, the social evening was a fun auction, members brought along items of books and bric-a-brac, plus lots of miscellaneous fancy-goods. Everything was sold, with money raised going into the institute’s own funds.
The raffle prize winners were Mrs C. Ilife and Mrs V.Cobb who also won the competition for the letter ‘N’. The Tea Hostesses were Mrs J. Hawes and Mrs A. Talbot.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd June at the Syston Community Centre , 7.30pm. folk singing duo ‘Brandywine Bridge’. Visitors are always welcome to attend.
