Hanging Baskets on the BrooksideIt’s been wonderful to enjoy Syston’s parks during the beautiful sunny weather we have all been experiencing – greatly enhanced by the tremendous floral displays not only in the parks but also around the town, in the numerous tubs and hanging baskets sponsored by local traders, which has allowed each tub and basket to be overflowing with colourful flowers and foliage. A special thanks also to the Syston Town Council Parks Staff for their hard work and commitment and also Syston in Bloom (all volunteers), for their relentless enthusiasm and determination to ensure every plant, no matter how small, was at its absolute best for the judges of East Midlands in Bloom to view on Friday 10th July.
Fencing – Central Park and Deville Park
The fencing of both Central Park play area and DeVille Children’s Playground is now complete and I hope this solves the problem at DeVille Park, of dogs straying into the small children’s play area.
Notice Boards
Some notice boards in Syston will be replaced this year, where required; this is an on-going project, with more being replaced next year.
Neighbourhood Watch signs will also start appearing over the next few weeks, as the Neighbourhood Watch team is developed and increased.
Skate Park and BMX Track
Suppliers are now busy working on new quotations based on feedback from the users, once all are returned, a further consultation will be held with the young people involved in these developments. If you are interested in either or both of these projects and aren’t already on the mailing list, please keep a watch on Syston Town Councils Facebook Page or website for updates and invitations.
Vandalism
It has been very disappointing to experience an increase in vandalism, especially in the Town Parks; Central Park has been particularly targeted this Summer, with sabotage to our newly painted benches near the Skate Park and Children’s Play area. This is mainly nicknames scratched into the paintwork on a daily basis, but has also included offensive words. A sign was also ripped out of the ground and thrown into the Brook. It is very costly to correct this and a sad waste of rates payers money, which could be put to much better use in and around Syston.
New Cemetery
A Panel has been set up to oversee the development of the new Cemetery for Syston and surrounding areas. The basic plans were agreed some time ago and are now being scrutinised by Councillors to ensure the cemetery is equipped to deal with the best needs of our local communities.
Centre Stage – Save the Date!
Two performances for the Community Centre have been booked, one in December and one in February 2016.
The Bowjangles Christmas Special on Thursday 17th December 2015.
The Bowjangles are a very energetic string quartet whom play, sing, dance, joke and juggle their way through their performance. This show emits huge amounts of energy and is suitable for the whole family. Further information regarding the evening and how to buy your tickets will be in the November edition of Syston Town News.
New Town and Park Warden for Syston, pictured right.Maree for Spotlight
Those concerned about the amount of dog fouling left in our parks and streets, will be pleased to hear that Syston Town Council has appointed a Warden to patrol Syston, in order to educate dog owners on the hazards of dog waste to young children as well as the anti-social aspect it creates. She will also carry dog waste bags with her to offer to those that need them.
Town Council employee and local lady, Maree Hodgson has agreed to take on the role and will be working for five days out of seven at various times and days. Maree has received training and guidance from the Street Scene Team at Charnwood Borough Council and will be starting her patrols during July.
If you know of any areas where dog bins are over-flowing or where there are particular areas in the town that are being used as a dog toilet then please let the Council know in the usual way via: mailbox@systontc.org.uk and Council Officers will inform Maree.
