Charnwood WIg’s

Well here we are ladies, four years on and a well established thriving WI. Thank you to all the loyal members and guests who continually show their generosity and support, also our not to be forgotten staunch committee who do a lot of behind the scenes work.
2016 promises to be another exciting year with plenty of interesting activities planned and more in the pipeline! Some of the activities we do are summer walks, skittle matches and having social evenings with a meal out at a country pub.
What a year 2015 turned out to be, not less because the WI Centenary celebrations took centre stage.
The last few months have seen us holding a kitchenalia stall at the Rothley Centre on Saturday 5th November, ably run by Michelle and Jan. Tuesday 12th November saw about 12 ladies having a social evening out at the Rothley Fisheries enjoying a fish and chip dinner prior to the Xmas festivities.
New Barkby WI invited two members to their 90th Year Celebrations held at Beedles Lake Golf Club. What a wonderful evening it was with a 1920’s theme. A beautiful meal followed by entertainment with Banjo Des who gave us a rendition of George Formby music and songs. Thank you New Barkby.
The speaker of the month was Julie Ede who gave us an entertaining, professional and illustrated talk on Bess of Hardwick, explaining her life of four marriages and how she became the richest woman in Tudor time’s, equivalent of a multimillionaire in today’s money! This was very unusual as women in those days had to hand over all their wealth on marriage to their husbands!
Two of our members Bev and Karen superseded all expectations when they again ran their ‘poppy fest’ and doubled last year’s total to over a thousand pounds for the British Legion. A big thank you goes to Odd John’s Cafe in the grounds of the Griffin pub, Swithland, who sold hundreds of crocheted and knitted poppies and also to John himself who wholeheartedly helped to raise so many funds. Also Bev and Karen would like to thank their army of helpers. The British Legion is a cause dear to the hearts of many people as is shown by the constant generosity of the public.
The Christmas tree festival was held at East Goscote Church with two of the Charnwood WIg’s members Julie and Margaret donating and decorating a tree with an animation theme.
Saturday 12th December saw us celebrating at Beedles Lake, joining in with their Xmas Party and Disco with a superb buffet – What a night that was! The WIg’s with family and friends certainly know how to party.
We finished off 2015 with a visit to Queniborough Church for a Carol Concert with the Soar Valley Group hosted by Queniborough WI. This was a lovely evening held in a beautiful church. After the carols we were treated to coffee, tea and mince pies.
So ladies, why not pay us a visit in 2016!?
