Syston Methodist Church News

Syston Methodist Church continues its fundraising activities at pace. This year we have held a Burns Night Supper with the Leicester Society of Royal Scottish Country Dancers providing entertainment, ensuring that those attending danced off the calories of the haggis, neeps and tatties! There was a well-attended quiz night in February, one of our regular craft fairs in March as well as an evening musical concert with a mix of classical and jazz music.
In April, we held our first Cycling Sportive, which was a 50 mile bike ride starting and finishing in Syston and heading through the countryside of Leicestershire and into the Vale of Belvoir. Refreshment stops were provided at Syston as well as three Methodist Chapels along the route in Hoby, Long Clawson and Barrow Upon Soar; our thanks go to the volunteers that helped serve the refreshments.
There were 25 entrants attracted from all around Leicestershire and surrounding counties that enjoyed cycling in the spring sunshine until the hailstorm towards the later part of the ride, however this did not dampen spirits and made everyone even more determined to complete the course, no matter what. We had one entrant who had cycled from his home in Derby, was first around the course and cycled home again before taking his wife out at 4.00pm! The feedback from the cyclists was that the event was extremely well organised (thanks to Rev Dave Warnock & his personal enthusiasm for cycling) so we hope to re-run the event next year.
Our next event is the Grand Summer Gala on Saturday 4th June. This year the theme is a ‘Right Royal Do’ in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday. The Gala will be held 10.00am until 2.30pm. There will be all the usual stalls, cakes, crafts, plants, books as well as some new side attractions (look out for the minister in the stocks) and as ever lots of refreshments. Entry is free so we look forward to seeing you there.
