What a great day was had by all who attended the Christmas event on Saturday 3rd December 2016.
After the event had to be cancelled in 2015, there were lots of nervous organisers in the time leading up to the day, with fingers crossed that the weather would not cause the same problem again!
Thankfully, it didn’t and the crowds turned out to support this great event that starts Syston’s festive season.
The Stage provided a great focal point with entertainment throughout the afternoon. Santa’s grotto was well visited and the organisers would like to thank Nest estate agents for sponsoring this and providing bags to hold the gifts given by Santa.
The Deputy Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Pauline Ranson, accompanied by her husband, visited and presented the winners of the best dressed shop window competition. The Chairman of Syston Town Council, Cllr Paul Henry, presented her with a basket of flowers, see our picture below left.
Families enjoyed all the activities, with many taking the opportunity to have their photograph taken with the Street entertainer, Superman.
The day finished with a spectacular fireworks display which allowed time for the a lights to turn on across the town.
The feedback via the Stn facebook page has been wonderful and thank you for all of your positive comments about the new lights, which hopefully, funding available, will be extended in 2017.
The only disappointing aspect was the vandalism of the Christmas tree, which was decorated with items made by the schoolchildren of St Peter and St Paul’s Primary Academy. They had made two candy canes, which were ripped off the tree and burnt in Central park. The remaining items; picture frames with baubles, parcels and wreaths all survived persistent attempts to remove them. Unfortunately, the tree lights were not so lucky as on the last attempt were damaged beyond repair and will need replacing before this years event. Fortunately, these acts were caught on CCTV and the police were informed and are investigating.
Now the work begins on the event for December 2017, so if you have some ideas or would like to be part of the event panel, then please contact Ursula Southern on 0116 260 7150.
This is a community panel and we do need some new members.
