Town C.C. Record Breakers

It may be the middle of winter but, despite the depressing news from Australia, positive thoughts about cricket are never very far away. Syston Town Cricket Club have a comprehensive set of records covering individual and team performances for the 1st XI, 2nd XI, Sunday XI and whole club performances. These records are second to none, no other club having such detailed and comprehensive lists and they are updated each winter by John Mills and myself. Full details can be found on the club’s website www.systontowncricketclub.co.uk.
A number of records are broken each year and 2017 was no exception. Zahir Taher (32*) and Pete Howard (45*) shared a record unbeaten 10th wicket stand of 84 for the 1st XI. Pete now holds the highest number 11 score for both the 1st XI and the 2nd XI. I’m told he’s been pestering Ivan for a few Sunday games next year to complete the set. Charles Wootton was ‘Mr Consistency’ for the 1st XI in 2017 and now holds the record (837) for the number of league runs in a season.
Perry Hill, pictured above, scored 454 runs for the 2nd XI (in only 11 matches) at a splendid average of 64.9 and Jaimal Bathia now holds the 2nd XI and Club Record for his 5 catches in the match against Huncote. This was remarkable considering he only took 6 catches in the whole season! For the Sunday XI Charlie Taylor (123*) scored his 6th century, Ben Drake (128) his fourth and George Corbett (122) his maiden century for the club. Ben Drake scored 510 runs at an average of 51 and Ben Tebbutt bowled splendidly all season to take 21 wickets.
For the Club, Charlie Taylor has now scored 9 centuries and is only two behind record holder John Mills who had better get his bat out again next year. Charles Wootton carried on his run accumulation in cup matches and reached the splendid total of 1023 for the season, curiously, without scoring a ton.
