Welcome to new Councillor – Cllr Lara Towell
Syston Town Council is pleased to welcome Cllr Lara Towell.Lara works full time in the Finance industry and has lived in Syston for six years. She also has 18 years experience of restaurant management as well as a few years volunteering as the Dreams Fulfilment Co-ordinator of Sunshine Dreams for Kids (similar to Make-A-Wish Foundation for sick and terminally ill children).
Lara says that she gets a great sense of satisfaction from helping others and making people happy. She has already proved that she is not afraid to ask questions, and is looking forward to helping to make Syston a better place to live and work.
If you are interested in becoming a Councillor, please keep a look out for vacancies on the Syston Town Council notice boards around the town or on the Syston Town Council website.
Syston Regeneration Project
As a result of the Syston Socio-Economic and Environmental Appraisal carried out by Charnwood Borough Council. The Stakeholder meeting will take place on Wednesday 18th April. The meeting will help to form an action plan that will be incorporated into a Syston Plan and Strategy for the future.
An update will be provided for Syston Town News readers.
Syston Civic Reception
The Civic Reception will take place on Friday 20th April. Local businesses have, as usual, been extremely generous with donations for raffle prizes. All proceeds from the raffle will be paid to the Chairman’s charity for 2017/18, the Warning Zone at Leicester.
New Cemetery
Invitation to Tender Specification to be publicised on the Contractor Finders website is now being finalised.
Council are considering the leasing of the Pavilion to its users, although the
talks are in the early stages.
Tree Panel
Utilising remaining tree maintenance budget for year 2017/18, as a gesture of goodwill, Syston Town Council approved works to several non-essential tree maintenance requests from residents of Syston on trees owned by Syston Town Council. These works have now been carried out. There is no guarantee that additional non-essential tree works will be carried out in future, this will always be subject to any budget remaining at the end of the financial year.
World War I End Centenary
Syston Town Council are working with The Royal British Legion and Syston History Society to create a memorial and fitting tribute to the Centenary of the end of WW1. If anyone else would like to be involved please contact the Council Office.
We are also seeking volunteers to help steward the road closure for the Memorial Procession. It is likely that road traffic management training will be provided. Please contact Syston Town Council office if you are interested in being a road traffic marshal.
Christmas Event 2018
Plans for the 2018 Christmas Event are now underway. The new style Event this will take place on Sunday 2nd December this year – further details to follow in a future report.
SOS Charity Fashion Show
Following the sell-out fashion show held at the Community Centre in October, a second event is planned for Friday 4 May. The audience will be treated to a catwalk show by volunteer models, with the opportunity of purchasing high street brand clothing at knockdown prices. The proceeds from the ticket sales, raffle and refreshments will be donated to the Chairman’s charity for the year – The Warning Zone. There are still some tickets available, please contact Syston Town Council office to buy your ticket. Tickets purchased before the show will include a free glass of wine or a soft drink. Tickets may also be available on the door, if there are
any remaining.
East Midlands in Bloom
Syston Town Council are entering East Midlands in Bloom again this year and hope to build on the Silver Award received last year.
The front garden competition will be run – see advertisement in this month’s Syston Town News (paper copy).
