Syston Happy Ukulele Band (SHUB’s)
A report from Len Abraham, Group Leader, and Dave Houseman Deputy Group Leader.
The Band meets every Friday at The Hub Café next to the Methodist Church, High Street, Syston, LE7 1GP at 1.45pm in order to commence at 2.00pm and finish at 3.30pm. Although we only started just before Christmas we already have 36 members.
The main aim of the band is to enjoy singing and playing a wide range of popular music accompanied by John the drummer and another John on the bass ukulele.
Each week, we rehearse for shows by practicing some of the 40 songs in our music portfolio, which is gradually increasing as we introduce new songs. At the time of writing this report, we have already appeared at 4 different local venues.
We entertain various local groups and anyone that feels they have a charity event which would benefit from a 30 to 45 minute performance are welcome to contact Len on 07812 787 238.
If you would like to have an enjoyable weekly sing-along and lots of laughs why not pop in on a Friday afternoon. Any Syston U3A member is more than welcome to attend before they purchase a ukulele, as well as those that are considering becoming members.
Many friendships’ have been formed. It really is a great way to meet people and play and sing songs together. There is a large amount of research showing that as we grow older active music making can enhance social cohesion, increase personal development and help contribute to all-round wellbeing.
No prior musical knowledge or prior musical ability whatsoever is required due to the innovative teaching methods used.
Len, or Dave, offer personal one-to-one tuition in a member’s home or elsewhere to enable brand new members to catch up.
Lastly SHUB would like to take this opportunity to thank Syston Methodist Church for hosting this very popular weekly event.
