5th ANNIVERSARY OF COSMOPOLITAN CARNIVAL, A DAZZLING FREE ARTS FESTIVAL IN THE CITY CENTRE, CELEBRATING THE VAST AND VIBRANT CULTURAL MELTING POT THAT MAKES UP LEICESTER. MANY STAGE AREAS WILL SPAN BETWEEN JUBILEE SQUARE TO HUMBERSTON GATE, WITH A SPECTACULAR AND DAZZLING GRAND FINALE PERFORMANCE IN JUBLIEE SQUARE.
Cosmopolitan Carnival 2pm-10.00pm on Saturday 18th August 2018, will take over the city centre to celebrate Leicester’s vibrant cultural mix through the arts and celebrate Leicester being one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country.
BBC Radio Leicester’s Kevin Ncube will compeer the main stage in Jubilee Square while an impressive line up of live music, dance and art will take place in various locations across the city. Artists include Leicester’s very own sensational ‘Tanni Browne and the Ankh Band’. All the way from Candida ‘NiLLa and the Ghettosocks ’ an awesome hip hop duo who will be performing as part of their European tour. ‘Funk Soul Collective’ will be performing funky soulful tunes and ‘Jafro’ will wow the crowd with amazing vocals and natural talent. ‘Major Ruse’ will inject a modern jazzy style to the stage and the awesome Tony Webster Band will play lively Latin jazz. There will be an exciting performance from Leicester’s Harri, Sun Sun, Strizzy Strauss and Stanza Divan. There will be a children’s area with free arts and crafts, comedy performances and circus skills workshop.
The grand finale performance will be ‘Cosmocular’ in Jubilee Square 8.45pm – 9.45pm
This dazzling performance will celebrate life, using the theme of ‘LOVE’ as it is universal and relevant to all. The story will unfold using a powerful combined arts approach, blending traditional and world instruments with digital sound, spoken word, rap and divine vocals. Punctuated with vibrant, large scale, projected animation, breathtaking Cyr wheel acrobatics and awe-inspiring contemporary dance. This spectacular performance will captivate and entertain its audience.
Cosmocular was conceived, managed and artistically directed by ‘Amanda Leandro’ of ‘Cosmopolitan Arts’. This dazzling performance will involve: a fantastic large-scale film projection piece by Barret Hodgson, dazzling Cyr wheel acrobatic performance Fiona Thronhill, an amazing live music performance created by Lead Composer & Music Director ‘Richard Everitt’ and Co-Composed by ‘Carol Leeming’ and ‘Mr Shay’. Astounding spoken word from Leicester’s wordsmith ‘Mr Shay’ and spectacular vocals from ‘Carol Leeming’. The ensemble includes the best musicians from Leicester: Adrian Blissett – bass, Mike Sole – Piano, Malcolm D’Sa – drums, Marcus Joseph – Saxophone, Miranda Booth – Harp, Hari Trivedi – tabla, Julie Maxwell – Trumpet and Ninja Bob live Turntablist.
This spectacular performance is a unique one off experience, showcasing Leicester’s most talented artists along side national and international artists, this is one not to be missed!
The Clock Tower stage compered by Leicester’s funny man Billy O’keeffe, will host a vast array of cultural music, comedy and spoken word, including Andrea Kenny from the Brandy Thieves who will perform her well known songs, ‘Euphoria’ a four piece Chinese folk group. ‘Jesse Wright will wow the crowd with her fantastic voice, ‘Ian Hall’ and ‘Nimah’ will bring side splitting comedy to the event, ‘Jonezy will bring a hip hop flavour to the stage, ‘Calvin Jeffry’ will sing songs that will lift peoples sprits, Lydia Unsudimi’s spectacular voice will entertain and amaze.
This year we have a ‘Youth Music’ stage featuring Leicester’s most talented musicians and artists. Cosmopolitan Arts youth music students will perform jazz, blues and pop, Vocal Tech will bring amazing singing and fantastic musician skills, HQ Familiar’s talented young artists will bring uplifting energy and 2Funky Arts will bring their dazzling ‘Project Live’ artists down to perform to headline the stage. Opal Arts and Entertainment will bring young female singers to perform their own songs.
On the High Street there will be an exciting blend of activities and performances, including a vibrant dance performance area hosting every imaginable genre of dance. There will be African drumming workshops, brass band performances from the ‘Southfields Concert Brass Band’ and fun activities.
Face painting, stalls and fair rides will be available on the day, so this is a real day out for all the family.
