Syston Town Band News

Syston Band make no apologies if you were held up on High Street at the end of February as the funeral of Band President David Elsmore made its way to St Peter and St. Paul’s. At David’s request the band accompanied his cortege to the church and played him in with a roof-lifting rendition of Aaron Copeland’s ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’. Syston Band was joined by players from seven other brass bands, including four former Syston Band conductors; a measure of the esteem in which David was held. As friends, family and band agreed, as they gathered in the spring sunshine, it was a fond and fitting farewell for a truly uncommon man.
Many Thanks
Every instrument in the band has an individual music folder that contains its parts for the season’s current programme. These get a lot of wear and tear as they’re taken from job to job as well as being used at practice, and the current set are reaching the end of their days. But thanks to the generosity of Mr Arthur Calow of Fire Curtains Group, the band are now the owners of a brand-new set of music pads. Syston prides itself on being a local band, it even has the town emblem on its crest, and support from within the community is especially welcome. Mr Calow’s company, on Brook Street, is within earshot of the bandroom, hard to get more local than that! His donation, and his support, are very much appreciated.
