An Unexpected Surprise from a Photo in Thurmaston Times
Readers of Syston town News who have been following the story of local man Dennis North’s recent visit to the Normandy beaches (as part of the D Day commemorations) may like to know about some ‘spin off’ from Dennis’s story and photo also appearing in the Thurmaston Times. One reader of the Times’ June/July edition had a great surprise when she read the article about Dennis, because on looking at the photo of Dennis in the paper, Mrs. Sharon Baines was convinced that this was the same young man who was in a photo that she had on her mantelpiece. The photo is of four young sailors including her late father Harley Strong.
So Sharon got in touch with her daughter Zoe Swain, who got in touch with the Times, who got in touch with me, who got in touch with Dennis; and to cut a long story short, Dennis confirmed that he was indeed one of the four Leicestershire young men in the photo, which is reproduced here. Dennis is pictured on the left in our photo, with his mates Harley Strong, Sam Belcher, and another of their mates, (name unknown). The photo was taken on Harley’s wedding day, 29th March 1945, when he married his sweetheart June Rowley. According to Zoe, Sam later married June’s best friend Joan and the two couples remained friends for the rest of their lives. All that from a photo in Thurmaston Times seventy four years later!
