Fosseway Bowls Club

Saturday the 29th June 2019 was a very special day for the Fosseway Bowls club. Not only was it the hottest day of the year and saw the greatest steam train in the world pass through our town but was also the day of the grand opening of our new clubhouse alterations and new facilities.
The day started with a match against our old friends Syston Town Bowling club in conditions that were absolutely perfect. 48 players took to the green at Fosseway for a most enjoyable match. In the interest of impartiality no mention will be made of the result.
In the evening more than 70 members and their guests attended a BBQ to celebrate the opening. Ninety per cent of all the work had been undertaken by the members, the majority of whom were present. Ken Sewell, our president welcomed the members and their guests and asked Ken Fowkes, the chairman, to do the honours and cut the ribbon to officially open the newly refurbished clubhouse, see picture above.
Ken was supported by three trustees, Brian Fuller, Doug Paling and Tom Woodcock. Ken’s speech thanked all the volunteers that had worked so hard over the winter to ensure the project was completed.
The BBQ that followed was excellent. Ken Sewell and Lee Paling did the cooking while Jean Harris with her band of helpers including, Linda Gant, Angela Sewell, Kath Leckie, Lesley Smith, Lita Mistry, Jenny Everett, Sandra Harris and Anne Rowe provided the excellent catering.
As you can imagine, with the evening still enjoying temperatures in the 20’s the bar was in big demand. But Chris Tressler and his team of bar staff including Lee Pooley, Brian Clifton, John Gant, Tony Peverill, Kelvin Clapham, David Hings and Gaynor Brant kept pace with demand and nobody was kept waiting.
The evening also included a beautiful poem composed and read by Kath Leckie which was received with cheers from the guests.
The evening ended with our singer for the night, Simon, performing well known songs that even allowed for a bit of dancing.
The evening was a resounding success.
