March is an exciting time for Year 6 primary school pupils as their parents receive notification to confirm which secondary school they will attend from Sept 2020. Wreake Valley Academy are really looking forward to meeting our new students and have been busy planning a variety of transition days to help prepare the Year 6 pupils coming to Wreake. We know that moving from primary to secondary school can seem very daunting when you are 11 years old and we want to help ensure the transition to Secondary school runs smoothly. Visiting our school regularly and meeting other pupils who will also be starting in September can help students become more familiar with the school, the staff and the children and reduce some of the worries pupils may have. Our current Year 7 pupils agreed that it does make a difference. This is what they told us: “The school’s not as big as it first seems.” “I was scared about being mixed with lots of older kids but it turned out that they are really nice.” “My first week at Wreake was one of the best weeks of my life. No matter what happened my friends were always there. Even if I got lost the older students were happy to show me around .”To help get our new students ‘Wreake Ready’ we have already invited over 200 pupils from five of our local primary schools to visit us for a sneak preview of our students performing the show Made in Dagenham. They saw some of the musical numbers being performed and were able to talk to the cast about the many ways you can get involved in school productions once you become a student at Wreake. This also gave pupils the chance to mix with pupils from other schools so that they have some familiar faces when they come to us in September. Later in the year we will be running two days of Sports Festival so that Primary school children from lots of different schools can work in teams to compete in a variety of fun sporting activities and start to get to know each other. In addition to all this we are working with individual schools and providing Master Classes in Maths, Science and English, a Creative Arts & Technology day and an Alien Craft Landing Science Investigation afternoon. At the beginning of the Summer term we will be holding an information evening for all Year 6 parents and pupils who have been offered a place at Wreake Valley. There will be an opportunity to meet the new Principal as well as finding out about the next steps in the transition process. Parents will also be able to talk to members of staff. If you are still looking for your ideal Secondary School, we do have some spaces available. Please contact us for more information on [email protected] or Tel: 0116 264 1080. We would love to show you around our school during the school day so that you can see our school in action, call us to book a visit.
