You are being asked to suggest land or buildings they think could be suitable for housing and employment development.

Charnwood Borough Council has launched a six-week consultation asking local residents to tell it about the location of potential housing and employment sites. The initiative is part of a review of its Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA). This year’s review is including employment land.

National planning policies require all local planning authorities to carry out an assessment of land and buildings within their administrative areas and their potential for housing and employment development.

This ensures they have taken into account all possible sources of housing and employment land when planning the future development of their local area.

Councillor Mathew Blain, the Council’s Cabinet member for Planning, said: “We are encouraging local people to tell us about land or buildings they own, or feel might be better used, in the borough to ensure that all potential sources of future housing land are considered.

“The exercise provides an opportunity for land and property owners to tell the council about their sites. However, you do not have to own a site to submit it to the council – so if you are aware of any land which you feel is not serving any useful purpose and might benefit from redevelopment for housing, please let us know.”

The assessment is an important part of the Council’s evidence base for the Local Development Framework – a set of documents that guide planning and development in the area.

The submission of a site does not guarantee that it will be allocated for development or receive favourable consideration if an application for planning permission is submitted.

Respondents are reminded that applications for planning permission are determined against the adopted development plan and any other material considerations.

The consultation period starts on Friday 3rd February 2012, and runs until Friday 16th March 2012.

For more information and to take part in the survey, visit:

“After the festive season, people may be contemplating how they will get rid of unwanted presents or dispose of household furniture etc. in order to accommodate new purchases made in the sales. Age UK is the answer!” says Peter Ralphs of the local Age UK. The financial situation is affecting stocks of clothes, books and furniture in Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s 22 shops upon which the charity so heavily relies, particularly now with so much uncertainty surrounding central funding for many of their services to vulnerable local older people. Tony Donovan, the charity’s executive director, said: “It’s a big problem. On the one hand, more people are saving money in these difficult times by buying the high quality goods which we sell, whilst on the other, traditional donors are apparently more inclined to ‘make do and mend’ rather than donate saleable items to our charity’s shops. If the situation continues, this will directly affect the level of services which we are able to provide in the future”.

Items can be delivered to any of the charity’s shops, for convenient locations, ring 0116 299 2233 or visit www.ageconcernleics.com
Large items such as furniture can be collected by calling 0116 278 1208.
If supporters prefer to give a cash donation, say £3, simply text the message ‘AUKL11 £3’ to 70070.

Heart and circulatory [...]

Forget the cards, fancy chocolates and romantic meal. Taking care of the ticker is the best way of making sure you and your loved one both live happily ever after.

Charnwood leisure centres are giving away free three-day passes for 10th, 11th and 12th February and entry into a prize draw to win a meal for two.

Heart and circulatory disease are the UK’s biggest killers, claiming 190,000 lives each year. That works out at one in three of all deaths at a cost of £30billion to the economy.

Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Our local leisure centres are buzzing with ideas and if you’ve not been to one recently it’s really worth taking a fresh look. To claim a free pass and enter the competition contact one of our centres and take care of your sweetheart.”

Loughborough Leisure Centre, Soar Valley Leisure Centre in Mountsorrel and South Charnwood Leisure Centre in Syston all boast the facilities needed to help heart health.

Taking care of the ticker is crucial for young as well old people because your lifestyle today affects your health tomorrow.

Fitness instructor Shelly Hillier said: “Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise is widely recognised as the best for the heart and includes running, dancing, cycling and swimming”.

Cllr Snartt added: “We’ll also be offering free fitness tests over the weekend to measure your weight, heart rate and blood pressure and work out a bespoke programme to get you on the road to perfect health.”

The latest research has linked obesity to heart disease and also identified overweight children as being at risk in later life.

The British Heart Foundation found that being obese nearly doubles the chance of a heart attack, even for non-smokers with healthy blood pressure and cholesterol. The best way of kissing goodbye to these health worries is by keeping active and eating healthily.

Exercise helps control weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve the overall sense of well-being.

Activities to try out include swimming, perfect for all-over exercise, Body Pump and Spinning for a calorie crunching workout and new dance-fitness craze Zumba.

The British Heart Foundation supports the Government guidelines which recommend adults aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise on five or more days a week to keep things ticking over. This could include a Wii Fit session, daily walk to the shops, taking the stairs instead of the escalators, learning how to swim and stretching while watching TV.

If you really want to wrap up something for your loved one, the British Heart Foundation’s Healthy Heart Cookbook is full of quick and tasty receipes, and watches which monitor your heart rate and calories as you exercise.

So get active now – and look after your sweetheart.
