Could you spare an hour or two a week to support someone recovering from depression, anxiety or experiencing other difficulties with their mental health?
Charnwood Mental Health Befriending Scheme supports adults aged 18 and over, experiencing mental health difficulties who are socially isolated. Volunteer befrienders support people to regain a better quality of life by helping to improve their confidence in social and public situations. They meet in the community or at the person’s home to share an interest or hobby, for an activity or simply for a drink and a chat. Volunteers are supported by the Project Manager and expenses are reimbursed.
A befriendee told us “I found it difficult to go out in public on my own. With my befriender I have been able to start going back to places and deal with every day situations that I could never have faced on my own. I now feel more confident and have started doing some voluntary work which is helping me to develop new skills and think about what I could do in the future.”
A befriender commented “It is a really rewarding experience to have the opportunity to support someone and to see them grow in confidence and to begin to look to the future again. I have gained a much better understanding of mental distress and how it can affect people’s lives.”
We are currently looking for volunteers to support people in all parts of the borough: Syston, Queniborough, Birstall, Anstey, Quorn, Mountsorrel, Barrow, Sileby, Rothley, Loughborough, Shepshed, East Leake and everywhere in between!
If you would like to find out more about the volunteer opportunities we offer, please contact Sue Davies on 01509 264 278 or email sue.davies@ageukleics.org.uk

The Syston and District Chamber of Trade, an organisation for businesses in and around the town, are busy planning a fabulous day on Central Park on Saturday 2nd June to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

This is a family day commencing at 10.00am with local crafts and food stalls, vintage ice cream van, plants and much more. At 11.00am the church bells will chime to signify the start of the entertainment on the stage.

There will be a variety of activities on and around the stage until 10.00pm, including Syston Brass, QDC, Zumba, local Choirs, local bands and gardeners ‘questions time’ with local gardening experts.

County Councillor Dave Houseman has helped in arranging an RAF flypast and the organisers would like to forewarn those with pets, horses or any other livestock that, as this will be a Spitfire and despite the minimum height regulations, the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight occasionally receives complaints about engine noise.

As yet we do not know the precise time but it has been suggested approximately 1.00pm.

There is also planned a variety of royal themed competitions: shop window, Children’s homemade decorated hat or crown, homemade decorated cake open to adults and children. ‘Tug of war’ open to teams of seven, age restrictions may apply, see the festival website wwwsystonfestival.co.uk for further details, also nearer the date a timetable for the day will be available.

The Chamber of Trade hopes that you will all take part and enjoy the celebrations. They are looking for people to help with making and/or donating Bunting in Royal colours of red, white and blue, fabric donations also accepted, qualified first aiders, marshals for after 6.00pm. They still have a few places available for entertainers and/or stall holders. If you would like to help or support the event in any way, please contact them through the website www.systonfestival.co.uk or email: systonfestival2012@hotmail.co.uk or through the STN on 0116 269 3221 and we will pass on your details.

Local women Felicity Austin and Annie Taylor and a team of willing helpers are organising an unusual fund raising event in Syston in aid of Rainbow’s Hospice and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research on 25th April.

The event is a historic fashion show featuring complete outfits from 1900 to 1999, together with news, music, and songs from each decade, plus a few iconic dances and surprise items! Although most of the outfits to be modelled are ladies’ fashions, we’ll also be showing some men’s and children’s clothes too.

This show will be a unique and once-in-a-lifetime occasion, not least because Felicity and Annie have discovered what a massive amount of work they’ve set themselves. However, it promises to be a hugely entertaining event, and the organisers hope that everyone in the audience will have lots of fun.

The event will take place on Wednesday 25th April in St Peter and St Paul’s Church at 7.30pm, doors open at 7.00pm. Whenever you were born, there’s bound to be some outfits shown that will fill you with nostalgia, to say nothing of the music and songs which will form a background to each era. To add to the atmosphere, you are invited to come in a vintage costume or favourite hat, although this is entirely optional. Although Annie and Felicity expect that the show will appeal mainly to women, gentlemen are most welcome too. Are there any old Teddy boys in Syston? Dig out those drapes and show them off for an evening!

Tickets cost £6, which includes a glass of wine or fruit juice during the interval and a raffle ticket. During the interval there will be a chance to have fun trying on all sorts of vintage hats on ‘Felicity’s Amazing Hat Stall.’ Tickets are available from Jennings of High Street, The Bookmark, Syston and The Secret Garden florist’s and by calling 0116 269 2543 or 07866 984 651. If you’re not able to get a ticket in advance you can pay on the door.

Do come along and join us for this special fun event, and support these two very worthwhile charities at the same time.

Research through an online, self-selecting survey asking young people about their experiences of self-harm was hosted by ChildLine, selfharm.co.uk, YouthNet and YoungMinds during January. The research found that, among 1,398 young people surveyed, more than half admitted to hurting themselves on a daily basis or a few times a week. The survey revealed that 41 per cent of young people who had hurt themselves had not told anybody about it, and those who did were most likely to tell friends first. However, the large majority felt that this hadn’t helped and still went on to hurt themselves as a way of ‘coping’.

Counsellors at the ChildLine base in the East Midlands received 528 contacts from children about self harm last year, 2010/11. This is a 32% increase on the previous year. The main concerns that children mentioned when they contacted ChildLine about self harm were depression, family relationships, mental health issues and suicide. X-Factor and N-Dubz star Tulisa is backing the campaign and encouraging young people to talk to someone:

“It’s incredibly sad that so many young people are using self-harm as a way to deal with their issues and that many are suffering in silence. I’ve experienced difficult periods in the past but having somebody to talk to makes a world of difference. I know many young people don’t have this and I hope they can be made aware that they can contact the charities supporting this campaign to give them the care, help and support they need.”

The survey also showed that:

86 per cent of respondents had injured themselves, the survey is not representative of the whole population.

Respondents cited feeling depressed as the main reason for hurting themselves. Feeling lonely and family problems also accounted for a high proportion of self-injury cases. Cutting was the most common way of self-harming with 81 percent of young people adopting this method. Scratching was also high at 71 per cent.

Boys are significantly less likely to tell anyone about their self-harming behaviour than girls.

Speaking on behalf of the four charities, Sue Minto from ChildLine said: “We’ve seen from rising hospital admissions and requests for all services that self-harm is a critical issue for young people. Nationally ChildLine alone has seen a 59 per cent increase in the number of self-harm related counselling interactions in 2010/2011 compared to the previous year. The overall number of ChildLine counselling interactions, across all issues, increased by 42 per cent, so the proportion of self-harm related activity is rising at a significantly higher rate.

“Speaking up about self-harm is not easy, and this is particularly the case for young men. Our charities are coming together to raise awareness of the range of support available for children, teenagers, parents and those working with young people. Whether someone is experiencing self-harm themselves, or becomes a trusted confident for someone who is, we want to ensure they are able to easily access appropriate support.”

In 2010/11 the East Midlands base received 308 contacts from girls compared to just 29 contacts from boys.

The charities, who between them offer helplines, online and face-to-face support and training for those who work with children and young people, are calling on anyone who knows a young person who is, or is at risk of, injuring themselves to get in touch with the relevant charity, who can provide the advice and support they need.
