The new look South Charnwood Leisure centre is due to open this month after its £3.1 million refurbishment which will give the residents of Syston and surrounding villages an exceptional facility that includes a new gym and dance studio, featuring the very latest equipment, as well as new changing rooms and additional car parking. The swimming pool hall, current changing rooms and reception have all been refurbished and the heating, electrical and filtration plants have all been replaced.

Officials from Charnwood Borough Council and contractors G F Tomlinson attended a ‘topping out’ ceremony on July 29th to formally mark the completion of the extension to the building.

Councillor Peter Lewis, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “I can’t wait to see it open and celebrate more good news for everyone in these nationally worrying and grim times.”

Barry Sewards, the Chairman of G F Tomlinson, added: “It is always very rewarding to be involved in a project for the benefit of all the public.”

A temporary office is now open on the school playing fields in front of South Charnwood Leisure Centre, for people to enquire about membership opportunities for the gym and pool.

There are some great deals on offer and further details can be obtained by calling into the office between 12 noon and 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am to 2.00pm on Saturdays.

Alternatively, call 0116 264 0057 and speak to Kevin Stanley or Helen Bird.

Further details about South Charnwood Leisure Centre including its re-opening date are available by logging on to www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/leisure

August was an amazing month for Declan (despite all the bad weather) team ‘Harley’ qualified as an accredited assistance dog team! This was a massive achievement and involved Harley competently picking up dropped items, walking along side the wheelchair, taking Declan’s socks off and sitting nicely in Rays Tray whilst we indulged in cake and drinks.
We were asked questions about the safety and welfare of a Dog for the Disabled assistance dog and Declan managed to answer all the questions without any help from me. Harley is now a real part of the family and is an absolute pleasure to have around.
The Team at Dogs for the Disabled are delighted that Alexandra, Declan and Harley have now qualified as an assistance dog team. We hope that the team will continue to develop, with Harley providing more support to Declan as their partnership grows. It is amazing to see what difference an assistance dog can make, not only in practical terms, but also to the confidence and self-esteem of our clients and their family. We wish them the best of luck in the future and look forward to working with them, Allie Hogsbjerg, Communications Officer, Dogs for the Disabled.
We are still £3000 away from Declan’s dream trip to Australia, we are now hoping to go in November so that we can have our Halloween fund raising disco as it has raised quite a lot of money over the past two years.
Declan continues to be very brave despite the fact it seems like his world is falling apart at the moment. At the end of August we are going to Norfolk with Duchenne Family Support group and are staying in a fully adapted cottage, which will be lovely. There will be ten cottages all with at least one boys with Duchennes, I am hoping that Declan might find some comfort in meeting others who have the same horrible condition as him as he is now aware of the full prognosis, there is nothing to hide from him anymore.

On Saturday 27th June the Sesame Playgroup had organised a duck race on the improved area of the brook under the bridge on Melton Road. A large crowd waited enthusiastically for the time when the ducks would be dropped into the brook and race off toward the Millennium Bridge. However, as with all the best ideas it didn’t quite go as planned. Due to recent dry weather the flow of the water was so slow that some intervention was required to encourage the plastic ducks to float down the brook (see picture below). The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the playgroup which meets at the Baptist Church hall Monday to Friday 9.00am to 12.00 noon for children aged three years and above.

The crowd waited patiently as every effort was made to get the race underway. The winners were: first Gill Eames, receiving £25; second was Annie Taylor who received £10 and third prize went to Helen Clarke who received £5. A total of £163 was raised from the event and this will be used to enhance a garden area and equipment for the children. A big thank you goes out to all those who supported this event.
