March saw the Launch of Leicestershire’s very first Athletics Academy. The new initiative which moves Wreake Runners into a new chapter in its 30 year existence began at Syston Rugby Club on 11th March. Although being a member of a Track and Field league for three years, the club have not solely concentrated on athletics coaching in the past. The Wreake Athletics Academy changes this and will focus on a multi-event, young people development programme, which introduces athletes to the fundamental skills of athletics, vital to every sport and is aimed initially at seven to 12 year olds, with plans to expand the scheme later to embrace athletes of 13+.The academy will focus not only on how fast someone runs or how far someone jumps or throws but also, more importantly, on developing the technical skills, ‘how’ to run, jump and throw, required to perform at full potential and move like a champion. In addition to technical skill the Academy will also look at an athlete’s physical, mental and emotional development, as well as their lifestyle and social development.
Progressive StagesThe Athletics academy programme is broken down into nine progressive stages. Each stage provides athletes with new and progressively more difficult challenges appropriate to their stage of development and will encourage athletes to learn all the skills and events of athletics, and will reinforce the importance of a good all round skill base. Athletes will be able to progress in stages similar to progression in other sports, such as the martial arts ‘belt system.’ The Wreake Athletics Academy are hoping to produce Leicestershire’s very first Athletics Blackbelt!Sarah Coleman who is lead coach at the Academy commented: “This is a fantastic chance for budding athletes to really gain the skills needed to run, jump and throw like an Olympic athlete. They will learn the skills which will be transferable into other sports as well and then put them into action, the sessions are designed to be key to developing athleticism and will also be great fun!”
The Wreake Athletics Academy launched at 4.00pm to 5.15pm on 11th March at Syston Rugby Club and continues throughout the year.

The new look South Charnwood Leisure centre is due to open this month after its £3.1 million refurbishment which will give the residents of Syston and surrounding villages an exceptional facility that includes a new gym and dance studio, featuring the very latest equipment, as well as new changing rooms and additional car parking. The swimming pool hall, current changing rooms and reception have all been refurbished and the heating, electrical and filtration plants have all been replaced.

Officials from Charnwood Borough Council and contractors G F Tomlinson attended a ‘topping out’ ceremony on July 29th to formally mark the completion of the extension to the building.

Councillor Peter Lewis, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “I can’t wait to see it open and celebrate more good news for everyone in these nationally worrying and grim times.”

Barry Sewards, the Chairman of G F Tomlinson, added: “It is always very rewarding to be involved in a project for the benefit of all the public.”

A temporary office is now open on the school playing fields in front of South Charnwood Leisure Centre, for people to enquire about membership opportunities for the gym and pool.

There are some great deals on offer and further details can be obtained by calling into the office between 12 noon and 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am to 2.00pm on Saturdays.

Alternatively, call 0116 264 0057 and speak to Kevin Stanley or Helen Bird.

Further details about South Charnwood Leisure Centre including its re-opening date are available by logging on to www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/leisure

August was an amazing month for Declan (despite all the bad weather) team ‘Harley’ qualified as an accredited assistance dog team! This was a massive achievement and involved Harley competently picking up dropped items, walking along side the wheelchair, taking Declan’s socks off and sitting nicely in Rays Tray whilst we indulged in cake and drinks.
We were asked questions about the safety and welfare of a Dog for the Disabled assistance dog and Declan managed to answer all the questions without any help from me. Harley is now a real part of the family and is an absolute pleasure to have around.
The Team at Dogs for the Disabled are delighted that Alexandra, Declan and Harley have now qualified as an assistance dog team. We hope that the team will continue to develop, with Harley providing more support to Declan as their partnership grows. It is amazing to see what difference an assistance dog can make, not only in practical terms, but also to the confidence and self-esteem of our clients and their family. We wish them the best of luck in the future and look forward to working with them, Allie Hogsbjerg, Communications Officer, Dogs for the Disabled.
We are still £3000 away from Declan’s dream trip to Australia, we are now hoping to go in November so that we can have our Halloween fund raising disco as it has raised quite a lot of money over the past two years.
Declan continues to be very brave despite the fact it seems like his world is falling apart at the moment. At the end of August we are going to Norfolk with Duchenne Family Support group and are staying in a fully adapted cottage, which will be lovely. There will be ten cottages all with at least one boys with Duchennes, I am hoping that Declan might find some comfort in meeting others who have the same horrible condition as him as he is now aware of the full prognosis, there is nothing to hide from him anymore.
