Historic Walk around SystonHistoric Walk around Syston

7.00pm from Syston Library. If you would like to learn about Syston's past, why not join local author Roy Townsend, who will be leading an evening stroll around the town and revealing its history.Roy has written a number of books about Leicestershire’s local history and has devised this guided walk after conducting extensive research into Syston’s past. The hour-long walk will take place on on Tuesday 3rd August and repeated again on Tuesday 14th September. It will begin at Syston Library at 7.00pm and returns to the library for refreshments and a chance to view some historic photographs of Syston. Tickets cost £2 and can be booked by calling the library on 0116 305 3500. Places are limited so booking in advance is necessary.

Leicestershire residents are being invited to nominate their local heroes to be immortalised in a new piece of public art – a portrait bench to mark Watermead Country Park's Connect2 project. The heroes can be anyone from a community hero, right up to a famous face, sports star or a historical figure. Local wildlife or even prehistoric creatures associated with Watermead, which is jointly managed by Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council, could also be considered. The portrait bench is an art initiative from sustainable transport charity Sustrans, who are one of the largest commissioners of public art in the UK. There will be a portrait bench at each of the Connect2 projects up and down the country. To have your say on who is on the portrait bench email etdcomms@leics.gov.uk, write to Portrait Bench – ETD Comms, Room 600, County Hall, Glenfield LE3 8RJ or log onto Watermead’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/watermead) and leave a message on the wall. Council launches free summer garden waste disposal scheme GREEN-fingered residents can get rid of their garden waste for free at a series of special garden waste collections throughout the borough. Charnwood Borough Council’s Garden Waste Collection Summer Special scheme will see a garden waste collection lorry roll into eight locations over the next two months so people, who have too much green waste, can bring it along to be composted. The scheme means people can say goodbye to all those extra leaves, twigs, hedge trimmings, grass cuttings, weeds, plants and raw fruit and vegetables from the garden. Residents can get rid of their extra garden waste at the following locations between 10am and 2pm: * August 14: Melton Road car park, Syston * September 18: The Working Mens Club, Garden Street, Thurmaston * September 25: Merchants Common Car Park, East Goscote For more information, contact the Charnwood Borough Council Contact Centre on 01509 634563.

Temporary Closure of Canal Footpath and Bridle way in Syston. Leicestershire County Council will be working on the footpath along the canal approximately 50m south of Wanlip Road to the Wreake Bridge and the Bridle way between Fosse Way and Meadow Lane will also be closed for resurfacing work. No diversion routes will be available and the works may last up to six months. Come to Charnwood Museum for an exciting range of children’s workshops, activities and exhibitions. Horsing Around Exhibition – open until 27th September - FREE This is a fascinating new exhibition revealing the varied role of the horse and its place in our society. A ‘must see’ for all horse lovers. Charnwood Museum is in Queens Park in the centre of Loughborough and is open April to September at the following times: Tuesdays to Saturdays 10.00am to 4.30pm; Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays 2.00pm to 5.00pm. The Museum is closed on Mondays except on Bank Holidays. Charnwood Museum is run in partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council.

1.30pm Children can create their own superheroes and villains with the help of a drama expert at some of libraries in the Charnwood area this summer. Daniel Wakefield of the Big Moon Theatre Company will coming to Birstall, Syston and Anstey libraries at the end of August to run a series of superhero workshops. The workshops will involve children using their imaginations to invent characters through drawing, discussion and roleplay, and then saving the world using improvisation and drama techniques. The workshops are suitable for children aged between 7 and 11 years old and places cost £3 per child.Places are limited, so if you are interested in booking a place please contact the relevant library on the numbers below.
