Babies and toddlers and their parents and carers in the Syston area are invited to go along to a fortnightly session just for them. There will be stories, rhymes and books to share for Wriggly Readers up to five years of age on alternate Thursday’s 10.00am until 10.30am.
Grown ups that have not already discovered the pleasure of sharing books with their baby or toddler should visit Syston Library on Upper Church Street and find out more.
Leicestershire Library Services work in partnership with health visitors to ensure all babies receive a Bookstart Bag containing free books for babies and information for parents and carers.
It’s never too soon to share books with babies and research has proved that children who develop a love of books from an early age start school with an advantage in both literacy and numeracy.
All libraries have books for babies and young children. It’s free to join the library and no child is too young.
For more information phone Syston Library on 0116 305 3500 or visit www.leics.gov.uk/libraries

Picture above, courtesy of the library, shows Left to Right: Sue Austin, Elaine Reynolds, Dave Houseman, Karen Cox and Helen Drakard

On Thursday 1st March Syston Library offered their visitors cake and refreshments to celebrate 50 years at its current location on Upper Church Street. The library also unveiled a display of local people’s memories of the 1960’s and had some 1960’s objects on loan from the Museums Service for people to look at and handle. Staff added to the festivities by dressing in 1960’s outfits.

The morning was a great success with older customers reminiscing and younger customers learning about life in the 1960’s. The library’s birthday cake was cut by County Councillor Dave Houseman and some lovely opinions were collected from customers. People commented that the best thing about Syston Library was,

“I can get free books and read as many as I want!”

“lovely staff, always smiley and helpful!”

“up to date facilities, light and airy and close to town. Computer area is very good if you have no PC.”

Staff at Syston Library would like to thank everyone who came along and helped them celebrate.

Our above Picture shows Miss Walton and Mrs Munden with some of the young voices from St Peter and St Paul’s School performing for the audience in the library.

Syston Library with St Peter and St Paul’s School got together to provide seasonal cheer and raise money for charity with carols, coffees and mince pies on Tuesday 20th December. The young voices from St Peter and St Paul’s School sang a range of carols for members of the public visiting the library and shared copies of the words so that everyone could join in. However, the children sounded so beautiful that people sang quietly in order to hear them. The charity that benefited from the event is Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland. The event also provided an opportunity for people to meet, catch up on local news, and relax as the holidays approached.
