The LOROS Lottery has recently launched their latest scratch card game featuring two brand new designs. One card is based on an idea from a patient at the LOROS Manor Croft Day Therapy Unit, the other is designed with wedding favours in mind and features two champagne glasses.

Most importantly LOROS scratch cards play a vital part in raising funds for patient care at the hospice, Manor Croft and throughout Leicestershire and Rutland.

The ever popular scratch cards are now even brighter and both designs offer the chance to win up to £1000! Priced at just £1 each the new scratch cards are available from all 21 LOROS shops or for bulk orders from the lottery office direct on 0116 231 8430.

Why not purchase LOROS scratch cards for your special event, they make fantastic table favours at weddings, corporate events, parties and much more or place them into birthday and special occasion greetings cards, the ideas are endless!

One local gentleman recently took his mum to Hinckley Hospital for an appointment and bought a LOROS scratch card from a stand whilst he was there, little did he know he was about to reveal a prize of £1000!

Next time it could be you!

Longslade Community College sixth formers are volunteering their time to support local charity CLASH to improve their computing skills.

The local charity CLASH, Community Leicester Arthritis Self Help, will provide a new and free computer confidence course for all local people and anyone who suffers from arthritis. The course will be held at the brand new £4.8m Palmer-Tomkinson Centre located at Longslade Community College from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and began on Thursday 12th January.

It will run every Thursday during term time and has been designed to help those with little knowledge of computers and the Internet. Students from the college will be supporting new learners on the Go-on Get Online course. The sixth formers are volunteering their time and are hoping to pass on their knowledge of the digital world.

Director of Post 16, Mrs Melody Mitchell said: “We are always keen to involve our students within the community. CLASH has always used our facilities and it is great that they still continue to do so. After recently opening our new community and sixth form center we now have the facilities to aid this course. The new computer suite with over 30 machines will provide the very best and up-to date equipment.”

CLASH is a local branch of Arthritis Care. It works towards providing information about, and access to the best possible service and support for people with arthritis. Other weekly activities for the group involve hydrotherapy, yoga and gym sessions making their common goal to live with arthritis and not to be ruled by it!

There are around 400,000 people with rheumatoid arthritis in the UK and over 20,000 new cases each year. It’s estimated that about 8 million people in the UK have osteoarthritis. About 15,000 children and adolescents in the UK will suffer from juvenile forms of arthritis.

For more information about CLASH or to benefit from the activities and support they offer please call 07594 584 402 or 07954 614 466. Additionally more information can be found online at www.clashgroup.org.uk

Eight lucky LOROS supporters recently celebrated winning a prize in the LOROS Winter Warmer Raffle draw, held at the hospice just prior to Christmas.

The first prize winner, Ruth, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been a supporter of the hospice for many years and a volunteer in one of the LOROS shops for the last 11 years. She was utterly amazed when she received a telephone call from Lottery Manager Liz Singleton telling her of her good fortune but delighted once the news had sunk in. Ruth then had a big decision to make; having been offered the choice between £10,000 in cash or a brand new Peugeot 207 Access, she consulted her family and after some deliberation decided to take the cash.

Liz Singleton commented “When the draw was made nobody realised that Ruth was a regular volunteer for LOROS, it wasn’t until I telephoned with the news that I found out. I’m delighted that on this occasion someone who has given so much to LOROS over the years has won the first prize”. The Winter Warmer Raffle brought in over £125,000, a fantastic amount of money which will help to maintain vital services both at the hospice and out in the community. Liz added “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters for their generosity. The profit from this raffle will make a real contribution to patient care, both at the hospice and in the community”.

The winning ticket numbers in the LOROS Winter Warmer Raffle are:
0532271: £10,000
0294277: £500
0191392: £250
0299031: £50
0211607: £50
0409575: £50
0405558: £50
0537322: £50.

The next major LOROS raffle draw will be held in May 2012 with tickets being mailed to supporters during March.

Tickets will also be available from all LOROS shops or the lottery office on 0116 231 8430 from mid March onwards.

Another £10,000 cash prize will be on offer, along with seven other prizes and following the draw, even more lucky winners will be announced.

If you would like to receive tickets to buy or sell on to family, friends and colleagues just ring the lottery office on the above number or email lottery@loros.co.uk to place your order.

“After the festive season, people may be contemplating how they will get rid of unwanted presents or dispose of household furniture etc. in order to accommodate new purchases made in the sales. Age UK is the answer!” says Peter Ralphs of the local Age UK. The financial situation is affecting stocks of clothes, books and furniture in Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s 22 shops upon which the charity so heavily relies, particularly now with so much uncertainty surrounding central funding for many of their services to vulnerable local older people. Tony Donovan, the charity’s executive director, said: “It’s a big problem. On the one hand, more people are saving money in these difficult times by buying the high quality goods which we sell, whilst on the other, traditional donors are apparently more inclined to ‘make do and mend’ rather than donate saleable items to our charity’s shops. If the situation continues, this will directly affect the level of services which we are able to provide in the future”.

Items can be delivered to any of the charity’s shops, for convenient locations, ring 0116 299 2233 or visit www.ageconcernleics.com
Large items such as furniture can be collected by calling 0116 278 1208.
If supporters prefer to give a cash donation, say £3, simply text the message ‘AUKL11 £3’ to 70070.

Saturday 26th November saw the Methodist Hall filled with children, parents and carers supporting St Peter & St Paul Pre-school at their annual Christmas Fayre. There were lots of stalls selling crafts, cakes, toys, tombola and a vast array of prizes for the raffle, all of which were very kindly donated by Syston businesses.
They raised a total of £793.66 which will buy a projector camera for the pre-school. The staff and committee would like to thank parents, carers and local businesses for making it a huge success.
The pre-school would like to thank Syston Youth Project for donating furniture for the pre-school after its recent closure. The children are enjoying the new seating areas in the library and the home corner.
