Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has launched its fourth annual Super Draw giving supporters the chance to win a top prize of £3,000! The raffle tickets come in books of 10 and are £1 each ticket.

Rainbows hopes to raise over £25,000 from the sale of tickets. This will go towards providing comfort and care for some of the poorliest children in the East Midlands region.

The draw this year will take place on the Friday, 30th July 2010 and the deadline of handing in the tickets is Friday, 23rd July 2010.

Jas Dosanjh, Lottery Sales Executive at Rainbows said: “Everyone is being brilliant and helping us by buying tickets for themselves or selling them to friends. People are selling raffle tickets in their workplace and even taking them into schools for parents and teachers to sell. It’s fantastic that everyone is willing to support their children’s hospice.” She adds, “We will also be selling tickets at the Rainbows ‘Miles for Mums Midnight Walk’ taking place on Saturday, 17th July 2010 at Loughborough Town Hall.”

To help sell tickets or to receive additional books to sell, call Jas on 01509 638 058 or email on jas@rainbows.co.uk.

On Sunday 6th June Mrs Pat Wadd held her annual event to help raise funds for the Hedgehog Rescue Centre at Pat’s home in Queniborough. Although the weather was but as good as it had been a days before a lot of supporters turned up and if fact there had been a cue waiting for the start of the event at 11.00am with the plant stall being very popular and almost sold out by the end of the day. Our picture features one of the current residents who had woken up early from his winter hibernation and Pat has found out that he is blind. He will be going to a good home once he is able to. Currently there are 10 hedgehogs in the centre receiving help and over the last year there has been over 500. Pat ask the Syston Town News to thank everyone who supported the event which raise an amazing £1800 on the day.

What a brilliant turnout of riders attended the Annual Sponsored Horse Ride on 30th May. It was a dry but very windy day for the 120 participants who all received a very splendid yellow rosette inscribed with the Loros Logo when they completed the six, ten or 13 mile ride. There was a welcoming ‘pit stop’ part of the way round for refreshments, then off into the beautiful countryside around Launde Abbey into unknown territory for many, the long ride took about two hours to complete at a steady pace (no galloping was allowed)! A few wrong turns were taken, but everyone was counted back in safe and happy.
The senior cup went to Lesley Collings who raised over £1,000, a tremendous result.
The junior cup went to eight year old Louise Mawby on her very pretty chestnut pony and accompanied by two very fit ladies who raised an amazing £150.
Another cup was awarded to nine year old Louise Arnold who also raised a whopping £70.
A BIG thank you to them and to everyone who took part in this fun day. The total raised from the ride for the hospice was £5,000.
See you all next year and keep on riding!

The Sponsored Ride on a windy May day,
With riders galore it is here to stay,
They start at Oxey, home of the Wrights,
With jodhpurs so fitted they looked like tights.
Some horses were calm and some quite wild
Ditto the jockeys but mostly quite mild.
Through fields and woods and the odd rough track,
They disappeared for hours….will they ever come back.
The ‘girls’ in the lorry collect the money
From 10 til 12 thank heavens it’s sunny.
Signing in to start and when they return
Some still get lost….will they never learn.
to read a map or follow the sun,
Or listen to instructions…..excuse the pun,
Cause every year we hope and pray,
The riders will improve before we turn grey.
The rosettes were yellow and really quite plush,
Pinned onto bridles which made some riders blush.
The day was successful and should raise a few grand
So thank you to the farmers for access to their land.
On Sunday 13th June at 5.30pm the two teams from Tesco, sporting their old team shirts, and the Co-op held a charity football match in aid of Motor Neurone Disease and in memory of victims of the South African coach crash. One in particular, Samantha Lake was a close friend to some of the Tesco team.
The weather was not kind to the teams as it poured with rain but the players were not put off and as you can see in our picture were delighted to be raising money for their chosen charities.
They held a minute silence in memory of the victims of the crash and the Tesco team organiser Darren and his team gave this special message to Samantha Lake ‘We made you proud today Sammi and we will always be thinking of you, we all love you’.They raised a total of £340.84 and this will be split between the Motor Neurone Disease Association and they hope to get a bench put in Central Park in Samantha’s honour.

Spring is the time of year for daffodils, baby lambs, the first signs of warmer weather and the big “Spring Clean” clear out! When doing your Spring de-clutter don’t forget there are lots of ways your unwanted items can be reused…Mending your itemsFound your old bike at the back of the garage with a puncture, or how about that broken lawn mower you’ve been meaning to get rid of. Don’t throw them away; many items can be repaired, often costing less than buying a replacement. Selling your itemsAll that clutter can be a great way to make some extra cash – remember one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure!Try selling your items online or through your local newspaper.
Some shops will buy used or pre-owned items such as DVD’s, video games and games consoles to sell onto someone else to use.
Car boots and garage sales are another great way to sell your unwanted items.Donating unwanted items to charity
The Spring Clean is a great time to clear out your wardrobes. Charitable organisations, including local charity shops would love any clothes or other unwanted items you can donate.
Clearing out an old table or sofa? Unwanted furniture, electrical items and household items can be donated to Furniture Reuse Projects. See www.lesswaste.org.uk or call 0116 305 7005 to find your nearest project.
The sixth annual charity real ale festival was held at Syston Community Centre between the 15th and 17th April and was very well attended. There was a wide range of real ales and ciders as well as hot food available. The atmosphere was lively, friendly and warm. The Rotary Club of Wreake Valley have worked hard to bring 28 different real ales to the town to raise money for local and national charities. Their main national charity this year is Help for Heroes which helps injured service personnel and their families on return from active duty in places like Afghanistan, Iraq and many other areas around the world. This festival was an opportunity to try real ale for the first time or for enthusiasts to get together to compare the range available. One of the most popular ales was called Wild Swan from Thornbridge, but overall everyone just enjoyed trying real ales from different parts of the country.
The picture below shows the festival organiser, Fred Sleath, with some of the Wreake Valley Rotary volunteers at the event. They said “we’re delighted with the support of the local community, customers and sponsors, as the Festival raised almost £3,000.”
