On Tuesday 25th May the children at St Peter and St Paul Primary school gathered in the main hall for a special assembly. They welcomed two guests from the Syston in Bloom committee, Mr Derek Cox and Mrs Marilyn Gant who had been the judges in the recent competition set for schools, where they were set a task of creating either a picture or collage or poem related to nature.
Mr Cox spoke to the children about what the Syston in Bloom committee do to help make Syston a more pleasant place to live and that everyone in the town was responsible in keeping it clean and tidy. He told the children that the standard of entries to the competition had been very high and that it had not been an easy task for the judges to decide who the winners were but they had agreed on the following in the three categories.
Mounted Category, Collages. First Liam, second Harry and third Ellie all year one children.
Unmounted Category, paintings or drawings. First Stacey, second Jordon and third Sophie all year three.
Poetry category. A joint first prize to Bethany and Abbey, second Shreya and third Libbie all year four.
Our picture above right shows the very excited winners with their certificates and prizes. Each certificate included a photograph of their work.
Well done to them and all who took part.

Ratcliffe College student Angharad Lloyd, year eight, is to be congratulated on being offered a place in the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra of Great Britain. She has been learning the violin since the age of five, and is preparing for Grade seven, so this achievement is great testament to her dedication and musicianship, given the extremely competitive nature of auditions at this level. Angharad will be attending a week’s residential course at the start of the summer holidays at Millfield School, Somerset.

Here are the extracts from the nine essays chosen fron the year ten group for the project entitled; ‘How do we improve the relationship between teenagers and the local community?’ They are in no particular order, but they do give a good insights as to how these teenagers feel.

In communities all over England, teenagers are seen as aggressive, threatening, violent troublemakers who do not care about the rest of the population. However, most teens are not like this in the slightest and research shows that the teens that are inherit this behaviour from parents or come from broken homes. So is it actually the children who are to blame? If parents were to instil good behaviour in their offspring thee would be less menace on the streets. Parents and families should be vigilant, teens can be unruly and unpredictable but a firm compassionate hand from a parent can lead them down he right path.
Sian HolmesMy thoughts are that teenagers are misunderstood and the pressure from them to grow up quicker than the previous generations and the competition for a good job at the end of their school career is very high, I think we need to pay more attention to the needs and capabilities of teenagers, so we gain a greater understanding of how they feel with the amount of pressure on top of them.
George NewtonOnce again I am appalled to see ‘youths’ and hoodies’ hit the headlines, unfairly stating that all teenagers are abusive, reckless people who of which have no thought for anyone else, but this is merely a stereo type. I am disgusted with this, how dare they say that! It is not in everyone’s nature to cause trouble. Teenagers are being victimised by stereotypical statements and, as a result people look down on teenagers and it hinders things teenagers can do for example get jobs, employers see teenagers as untrustworthy. You were teenagers once; how would you feel if you were stereo typed as a teenager and everyone would avoid you in the streets and follow you around shops?
Jack SouthinI think that the way teenagers could improve their relationship with the community and break stereotypes is if they met each other. They could do this by local schools or clubs having an open day. It gives the students a great chance to give the community an excellent impression of what they are really like and they are able to show off their amazing achievements.
Another way that teenagers could express their harmlessness and kindness is by helping the elderly in their local village and do jobs for them.
Jess PetcherIt baffles me to know that there are so many crimes and mistakes from adults but lots seem to think teenage stories on alcohol, drugs and gangs are more important because they can pin the blame on someone else, unable to stand up for themselves, rather than face the consequences of their own actions they are afraid of what they will see of themselves in the mirror.
For me an obvious solution to this is to get teenagers and the local community involved in something together so the relationship between both can improve. We could do charity events for Haiti and age concern. Hopefully this would help create a bond between the age differences and make people think twice about stereotyping teenagers and newspapers and the media would be ignored on some of the lies they produce.
Alice RoizerAfter doing some research, teenagers are now all as bad as they are shown in the media. Outside school there are clubs and activities that all teenagers can attend, but they choose whether or not to do them, for example, Rangers, Scouts and Guides. These types of clubs allow children age from seven to 18 (18 and over for leaders) to join and participate in activities and things to do with the community or environment. The Scout and Guide Association have been running for 100 years and already 56,470 young people have joined a group providing children and teenagers with the chance to do some good and make a difference.
My point of view on this subject is there is an equal amount of anti-social behaviour and good behaviour from teenagers in the community. Although some teenagers are good, adults only usually see the bad side as it is more recognisable. In the paper lately there has been a purple leaflet ‘Tackling Anti-social Behaviour’ It looks like the community is serious about anti-social behaviour and so are the police.
Paige NuttallSome teenagers don’t do things like drugs and alcohol, they do positive things and are aware of their behaviour. For example help their parents in the house, cleaning, washing the pots and hoovering around the house. Teenagers could also help the elders for example doing their shopping, do their gardening so the elders don’t have to bend down. They could also help by doing their cleaning. Another example is to improve the community is picking up litter in the community. The community could make more youth clubs, sporting events and more swimming baths.
Megan MarchantHave you ever wondered how teenagers feel when they get judged on their age? Why is it that teens get judged on their age, but it’s not ok that people get judged on their race, religion or sex? Isn’t it the same thing? The youth get discriminated and yet no one is trying to stop it. Does anyone actually know how teenagers feel about this prejudgment and pre-formed opinion people have on them before anyone has even taken the time to know them? You will find most feel belittled, abused and harassed.
The age groups adults hate the most will soon become the people that will be paying their pensions, deciding on how things will be run and they will be bringing up the next generation. And still people treat teens like an inconvenience when soon they’re going to have to rely on them. So perhaps it’s time that adults should treat the youth like they want to be treated themselves.
Jessica HillTo conclude, teenagers can make the difference with just a few small changes, don’t encourage bad language, don’t encourage attitude, dress more casually and smile to someone to make their day.
Jade Heeley

Tuesday 20th April was a bright, sunny and comparatively warm day as a group of year eight students from Wreake Valley took part in a voluntary activity at The Laurels Nursery School. They were creating a vegetable and flower garden as well as painted fruit and vegetable shapes for the nursery to use with the children to promote healthy eating, see picture below.
FOCUS is a local charity that works with young people aged 13 to 25 years to encourage voluntary work by helping small groups to engage with local community organisations to create projects for their local community. The students from Wreake Valley had three days to create a design and then complete the project. They then presented their achievement to the rest of the year eight students at Wreake Valley. Project manager John Belcher explained that all the students in the group had specific roles to help them learn about the need to be organised and the ability to work as a team in order to complete the task within the given time and budget.
All the students participating in the activity said how much they enjoyed doing something for the community and hoped the children at the nursery would enjoy what they have created for them.
For further information about participating in voluntary work with FOCUS telephone 0116 251 0369

Children at St Peter and St Paul have been learning about different cultures and on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th April they were visited by Zaahira Kidy and Monowara Gani who visit schools explaining Islamic art to groups of children across Leicestershire. The two day event gave each year group the opportunity to experience Islamic culture through Art. The children learnt the Arabic alphabet and were able to produce a small picture that included their name in Arabic to take home with them. They were shown a presentation of a variety of Islamic culture including the Koran, symbols and one of the tutors sang a prayer which helped the children understand the pronunciation of the alphabet. The picture shows a class enjoying the activity and when asked they said that they had enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about Islamic art and culture.

The students then had to conduct their own research and produce an article to say what they found out and how they could improve the relationship. Nine articles were chosen from the year group and here are the names of those chosen Alice Roizer, Sian Holmes, George Newton, Jack Southin, Paige Nuttall, Jess Petcher, Megan Marchant, Jessica Hill and Jade Heeley.
We will print extracts from each in the next issue.
On Wednesday 21st April Mr Roger Wilson, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, was accompanied by his wife Sheila as they visited Thrussington Primary school to congratulate and celebrate with staff and students for achieving their recent Outstanding Ofsted report.
It was a glorious afternoon for the visit with bright sunshine. The school has 55 children on role and all were busy with a range of activities as Mr and Mrs Wilson were given a tour of the school. Mr Wilson started by working and talking to the younger children in year one who were learning about the fire of London and producing pictures of houses from that period, they then moved through to the IT suite where a group of children were investigating American cities and producing a presentation using powerpoint. The third class was made up of years five and six who were learning French and sang a song for the visitors, before spending some time talking to the group and practising their French. Outside the tour continued around the greenhouse where children learn about growing vegetables and also use it for science studies. The play area includes an outdoor stage where they held an open air performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream last year and hope to hold another production this year.
The school which five years ago was facing closure, has worked very hard to turn things around and have now been rewarded with an Outstanding report from Ofsted. Mr Wilson said “This is a marvellous achievement not only for the primary school, but also for the local community In which it serves. Everyone at the school has worked extremely hard to reach this outstanding level. I congratulate them all and wish them every success for the future.”
Mr and Mrs Wilson finished their visit by calling into classes in the village hall were a group was participating in PE.
On the Wednesday 5th May Mr and Mrs Wilson visited Gaddesby Primary school who also received an Outstanding grade from Ofsted in a recent report. The school has gone from being a ‘satisfactory’ school to ‘outstanding’ in two and half years. The children and staff have worked very hard on developing a creative and inspiring curriculum, enriching the children’s lives with a variety of activities. During their visit Mr and Mrs Wilson were entertained with a dance prepared by girls from the year six class. They are entering the dance act in a local talent contest and this has given the pupils the chance to showcase their talents to their peers, developing their self esteem and confidence. The act had been planned and choreographed by the children with support from their class teacher.
Mr Wilson said “The children demonstrated great confidence and artistic ability by putting their own dance routine together and I hope they do well in the contest.”

On Thursday 25th March 2010, the combined Junior and Senior Choirs, accompanied by the Senior Band, joined forces with The Ratcliffe Chorale to perform Word of Life by Director of Music, Matthew Jones. See picture.
With over 180 performers and an audience of approaching 350, this was a performance on a grand scale.
Word of Life is a cantata, drawing its inspiration from biblical texts, which reflects upon the creation of the world, the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was fitting, therefore, that its first performance should take place in the college Church, with the combined choirs sited directly under the imposing crucifix; this was particularly poignant during the movement recalling the crucifixion.
Solo roles were sung superbly by Lorna Rowley, Sally Croysdale, Jessica Neuberg, Gareth Lloyd and Keith Croysdale, the combined choir was both dramatic and sympathetic, whilst the orchestral accompaniment was of the highest calibre. The silences between movements enabled the audience to reflect and to engage with the work as a whole, whilst the standing ovations at the end demonstrated the emotional impact that the performance had made. This was a performance that will go down in Ratcliffe College history, a shared musical experience that will be remembered for a long time to come.
