On Saturday 15th May, 30 to 40 females showed up to the launch of the Race for Life training programme that is currently being held by Results Weight Loss in Thurmaston. Personal trainer and managing director Joe Hanney said “It was a fabulous turn out and it just shows how much the Cancer Research Projects means to all these ladies, I am so excited to get this started and more importantly start to raise as much funds as possible as well as getting these ladies over the finishing line at the event.”
Results Weight Loss has worked with well over a thousand females and they came to understand the main barriers that females were feeling towards taking part in the Race for Life event and one of those being the event distance. Joe Hanney decided to offer an eight week complimentary training programme and gym membership to help those females that were finding it hard to convince themselves that they could actually complete the distance of the event. “This is so empowering and a complete mind shift to see so many females attend this event we are holding.” Joe said.
For more information or to interview both Joe Hanney and the participants please feel free to contact him on 0844 844 2471 or email info@resultsweightloss.co.uk

The evening of the 21st May was warm and sunny as Syston Ladies Bowling Club celebrated their President’s Day.
The event was well attended by both the ladies and men’s sections of the Club. Also invited were a few other ladies who help in different ways.
Those who wanted to play bowls had a short game while others either watched or chatted with friends. Once the game was over, everyone came into the Pavillion and sat down to a delicious meal prepared by members of the ladies committee. The tables laid and floral arrangements were in the club colours. The flowers having been kindly donated by our new local Tesco store.
President Ruth Wheeler spoke shortly about the long history of the Club with reference to the booklet written by the late John Meadows.
Attention was made to the planning and building of the present Pavillion which was officially opened 25 years ago.
This years’ charity is ‘Operation Christmas Child’ and £225 was raised during the evening. This will be forwarded to the charity when the project of filling shoe boxes with small presents for children who would never otherwise receive presents, is completed.
As everyone went home the ladies committee members should have been proud that all their hard work was rewarded by the way the evening ran so smoothly.

On Monday 7th June, the Mayor of Charnwood Borough Council, Councillor Jill Vincent, visited the Syston Bowling Club to present to the Club a specialised wheelchair and ancillary coaching equipment, see picture right. The chair and equipment have been purchased, at a cost of £3000, following the Club’s successful bid for a proportion of the £20,000 recently made available by the Leicestershire County Council Local Area Forum (South Charnwood area comprising Syston, Thurmaston and Wreake Villages).
Also in attendance as special guests of Club Members were the Chairman of Syston Town Council, Councillor Howard Midgely, Syston Town Manager, Mr Alan Clark, Coach of the Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Club, Mr Mike Foster and President of the Rothley and Soar Valley Lions Club, Mrs Norma Grimes. They were greeted by Club Chairman, Colin Grimes and President of the Syston Ladies’ Bowling Club, Mrs Ruth Wheeler. (Men’s President, Peter Murray and Vice-President George Dodge were unable to attend because they were involved in a fixture in the Loughborough League.)
In her brief presentation to an attentive audience of Members, the Mayor commended the Club on its efforts to develop the sport of bowling among disabled members of the community – both the young and the more mature. Drawing on her own family experience, she recalled how membership of the local bowling Club had greatly benefited her parents when they moved to a new locality. Through their membership they had rapidly made many new friends and were able to develop a vibrant social life in addition to deriving great pleasure from the exercise involved.
She congratulated the Club and, on behalf of the Leicester County Council and the Local Area Forum, expressed great pleasure in formally presenting the equipment.
In accepting the gift, Club Chairman, Colin Grimes, welcomed and commended the work of the Local Area Forum which, he believed, was a striking example of local democracy successfully at work, enabling communities themselves to decide how best limited funds should be distributed and applied for the benefit of the communities concerned.
He confirmed and explained how the equipment would be used to enable the Club to develop and expand coaching services and extend membership to disabled people in the locality helping to fulfil the Club’s stated objectives as a registered Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC).
He thanked Syston Town Council and Syston Rotary Club for the provision of disabled toilet facilities adjacent to the Clubhouse and paid tribute to John Wheeler, late husband of current Ladies’ President Ruth, and a former Chairman and President of the Club, for initiating the project during his time as Chairman of the Syston Rotary Club.
He wished to place on public record, the Bowling Club’s thanks to the Council for their sympathetic and supportive approach to the recent negotiations over the renewal of the lease for the bowling green. During the negotiation process a very close and mutually supportive working partnership had been developed as both parties seek to promote and maximise the benefits of the green as a valuable community asset.
Rothley and Soar Valley Lions were thanked for the provision of a temporary clubhouse entry ramp.
He then paid special tribute to Club Coach, Des Eggitt, for his total commitment to his voluntary role, always ready to help and assist both new players and the more experienced who feel the need to improve their game. Through his efforts, the Syston Project, a drop-in centre for people with special needs such as Down’s Syndrome and cerebral palsy enjoy regular weekly coaching sessions on the green. The wheelchair and target mat would strengthen that coaching programme enabling those with a physical disability also to participate while minimising any damage to the green.
He was delighted to confirm that the provision of the special chair had already resulted in an increase in Club membership. Mike Foster, the Coach of the Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Club – the Club’s nominated charity in 2009 – had now joined the Club as a means of remaining active during the close Season for basketball. This would simply not have been possible without the provision of the chair, the ramp and the disabled toilet facilities. It was the hope of the Club that this would be the first of many.
Finally, the Mayor and other special guests were invited on to the green where, with the help of Members, a demonstration of the use of the wheelchair and the ‘target’ mat was arranged. Mayor Jill Vincent and Chairman Howard Midgely then accepted an invitation to try their hands at the great game of bowling to gain a flavour of the skills required and to understand the attraction of the sport for people of all ages.
The event was brought to a close with tea and light refreshments in the Clubhouse.
Enquiries about membership of Syston Bowling Club should be made either to Rob Wilbourn 01664 424813 (Men) or Val Foreman 0116 260 9635 (Ladies).

On Friday 4th June Councillor Peter Osborne, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, who is a keen long distance runner having run four international marathons, will officially declare the new route open. The new route around King Lear’s Lake at the Watermead Country Park is the first of its kind in the East Midlands. The route is a permanent ‘3-2-1’ marked course, allowing runners to measure their progress over three different distances. A start and a finish are clearly marked and a red line follows the route, with markers every 100 metres. The new route is one of a series of similar marked running routes around the country as part of the ‘Run in England 3-2-1’ project. Run in England 3-2-1 is a community-based initiative created to deliver fun and safe running activities in parks and open spaces. The project has been commissioned by England Athletics and funded by Sport England.Peter Osborne, Chairman of the County Council, said: “I am delighted that the first ‘3-2-1’ route in the East Midlands is here in Leicestershire. Jogging is a great way to keep fit and what better place to give it a go than Watermead Country Park, on a safe, flat and accessible route around beautiful King Lear’s Lake.”
It was a beautiful evening and a large group of runners turned up to take part in a fun run along the mile circuit which is marked by a red band that circumnavigates the lake with a start and finish marker as these points do not occur at the same point and the track is measured to precisely one mile. The young runners featured in our picture are from the Breedon Hill Striders who are shown with Andrew Rorison, Coucillor Peter Osborne, with his wife in front of him and then Andy Stubbs from Line Link who installed the line and markers.
Andrew Rorison, Country Parks Development Officer said that he hoped the new route would encourage more use of the park’s facilities as it was for everyone to use not just for clubs and organised events.
The new route is available at any time, though there will be organised events in the future including two further 5km and one mile ‘King Lear Runs’ on the
2nd July and 3rd September.
Coca-Cola World Cup Competition winner Damon and his father also Damon had an exciting trip to the World Cup between the 15th and 20th June. Their all inclusive trip was as a result of Damon junior winning one of the pairs of tickets in a Coca-Cola run competition. They started their journey from Heathrow to Cape Town, where they stayed in the Capetonain Hotel. They had a tour of the City on the Wednesday evening including a visit to Table top mountain. Thursday they had some time for themselves to relax or enjoy the festive mood in Cape Town before going off in the afternoon to a tour of Cape Winelands, although not Damon juniors idea of fun! On Friday they again had some free time and then had a pre-match meal before going to the Green Point stadium for the highlight of their visit to see England play Algeria although not the best performance!
Saturday morning gave them time to recover from the match, a visit to Canel Walk before they made their return journey home to Heathrow were they arrived on Sunday morning, tired but thoroughly pleased to have had such a fantastic adventure.
Damon plays for the under 14’s Thurmaston Magpies who also had reason to celebrate as they have again finished the season at the top of their division. Well done to them and to Damon who hopes to be able to play for his country in a future world cup event.

On Sunday 25th April the Midland Rally Sport team took part in the first rally called Oak Leaf Stages at Swynnerton Army Training Camp. This is co-driver Steve Whitehorn’s report of the event.
Car 50 – Paul Daniels and Steve Whitehorn, Midland Rally Sport.
Our first ever stage rally began with a night’s stay at a local inn. If the anxiety wasn’t enough to put me off sleeping, the karoake directly below going on until the early hours of the morning certainly would!
We arrived at the army camp just before 7.00am on Sunday, and our service crew shortly afterwards. A quick final check over the car and all that was left to do was wait. Drivers’ briefing was short and sweet and the first cars started at 10.00am, with us 27 minutes behind at the back.
Swynnerton army camp has a network of roads, on which five different courses were planned. The rally consisted of two runs on each course, a total of ten stages. From Service Out Control, we had a three quarter of a mile drive over gravel to the stage start. We soon got to the starting lights, saw green and our first stage began.
We approached the first stage ‘cautiously’. I use this term carefully, since Paul wasted no time in getting the revs up to 6000 at every opportunity. But we didn’t take any chances at the corners, as our main goal was to finish. We completed the first stage with a respectable time, but on arriving at the stage finish, we engulfed the marshall in smoke from the brakes! The following 20 minutes in service saw the wheels removed and the brakes allowed to cool. Paul received a gentle advisory note to ‘ease off the middle pedal a bit’.
Stage 2 was a repeat of Stage 1, Stage 3 was going fine until I realised that I was reading off the map for Stage 5 EEEK! I just managed to reorganise myself in time to warn Paul of an impending hairpin, to be later followed by apologies to the service crew for making him ‘warm’ the brakes again.
The drama began after Stage 4, as the gearbox linkage went loose. With only 20 minutes of service time, the crew frantically set to work. Four
tie-wraps later and the problem was solved, and we were back out in time for Stage 5.
During Stage 7, we had reason to cheer as we passed a Fiat Uno that we knew to be in our class, having suffered a problem and pulled out. We subsequently leapt to third in our class out of four remaining runners.
By Stage 9, we were really into the swing of things. Paul was squeezing every last bit of performance from the car and I was encouraging him further. We put in a good time and then improved it by 34 seconds on the repeat stage to finish the rally.
We had only set out on this rally with the aim of finishing. With a car built to BTRDA Rally First rules, no engine modifications, competing against fully modified 1400s, we expected to be the last of the runners. We were therefore very surprised to find we had jumped the Silverstone Scholarship MG ZR to second in class by 90 seconds! Suffice to say we were well chuffed and received nothing but praise from friends and family.
Huge thanks goes to Baz for all his advice and for all the kit and service van, we really appreciated it, thank you and to Mrs Wheeler (probably the first ever heavily pregnant service crew member!), Mike Jordan for stepping in as mechanic and giving us advice on the day, Dhiren Solanki, Kyle Abell and our friendly scrutineer Nathan Marriott. Thank you all!! Roll on the Rally of the Midlands!
