Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th September from 10.30am to 4.30pm. The parishioners are keen to show off their typical east Leicestershire village by encouraging people to have a trip out to an Exhibition/Sale of the work of talented local artists, displayed in the beautiful village church over the weekend of 4th and 5th September. Entry is free, though donations in aid of St Thomas Becket Church are unlikely to be refused! Tea, cakes, etc. will be available. Any queries, please ring 0116 259 6550.

Try A Tri Event
Swim, Run And Cycle! 12.30pm – 4.00pm Rawlins Community CollegeQuorn, Loughborough. Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Together Team is offering local residents the chance to participate in ‘Try a Tri’ event, which is being held in partnership with the Charnwood Triathlon Club. Participants will take part in a swimming session and learn the basics, try out some running drills, and bike transition skills. The sessions will be led by qualified triathlon coaches. It is open to anyone aged 16 years and over and provides an opportunity for beginners or those wishing to improve their fitness level and have not been active for many years. The cost of the session is £5 per person. Participants will be required to bring swimming costume/ goggles, a road worthy bike and helmet and a pair of trainers with them. The National Trust Leicester Association season of autumn/winter meetings begins with an evening meeting on Tuesday 14th September when Tim Mackrill of Leics & Rutland Wildlife Trust will present an illustrated talk “Return of the Osprey”. The meeting will be held at the Premier Inn, Braunstone Lane East, Leicester at 7.30pm.An afternoon meeting will be held on Wednesday 22nd September at which John Coleman will describe “Ballooning over the Masai Mara”. If you would like to learn about Syston's past, why not join local author Roy Townsend, who will be leading an evening stroll around the town and revealing its history.Roy has written a number of books about Leicestershire’s local history and has devised this guided walk after conducting extensive research into Syston’s past. His first book ‘Inn-vestigated’ was published in 2005 and looked into the origins of public house names. He then produced a pamphlet about Francis ‘Tanky’ Smith, Leicester’s first detective, and his most recent book 'Almost Forgotten' gives details of the famous and infamous characters from Leicestershire’s history. The hour-long walk will take place on on Tuesday 3rd August and repeated again on Tuesday 14th September.It will begin at Syston Library at 7.00pm and returns to the library for refreshments and a chance to view some historic photographs of Syston. Tickets cost £2 and can be booked by calling the library on 0116 305 3500. Places are limited so booking in advance is necessary.

Wedding Photos. Syston Local History Group’s Annual Exhibition will take place in the Methodist Church Centre, High Street, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. As in the last two years there will be some new display boards to replace some of the old original ones. There will be a display of Household Bygones, and Michael Finney will be attending again with his paintings and prints of Syston. This year there will be a display of Syston wedding photographs, and three from the early 1900s and several from the 1940s and later are already promised, why not bring yours along? (You will need to collect it at the close of the exhibition). As in previous years admittance is free and refreshments will be available. It is hoped that Syston Past 3, the next booklet in the series will be available.

Council's FREE summer garden waste disposal scheme. GREEN-fingered residents can get rid of their garden waste for free at a series of special garden waste collections throughout the borough. Charnwood Borough Council’s Garden Waste Collection Summer Special scheme will see a garden waste collection lorry roll into eight locations over the next two months so people, who have too much green waste, can bring it along to be composted. The scheme means people can say goodbye to all those extra leaves, twigs, hedge trimmings, grass cuttings, weeds, plants and raw fruit and vegetables from the garden. Residents can get rid of their extra garden waste at the following locations between 10am and 2pm: * September 18: The Working Mens Club, Garden Street, Thurmaston * September 25: Merchants Common Car Park, East Goscote For more information, contact the Charnwood Borough Council Contact Centre on 01509 634563.

This annual walk will start and finish at Severn Trent Visitor Centre, Cropston. The 12 mile walk starts at 9.30am and the six mile walk starts at 10.30am.
