Tonnes of old and broken small electrical items were expected to be collected by county school children during the week commencing 26th March.

A total of 49 schools took part in an initiative organised by Leicestershire County Council in partnership with Sims Recycling Solutions and DHL Envirosolutions.

Children were asked to bring in items such as old irons, toasters, remote controls, kettles, unwanted computer equipment, hairdryers and battery powered toys.

A series of ‘Eco Days’ were held at the schools when the gadgets known as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) will be collected by Sims Recycling Solutions and DHL.
They will then be processed and key components from the devices will be recycled and reused in new products.

The scheme hopes not only to increase the recycling of small electrical items, but will also to promote awareness of the fact that if they are thrown in the wheelie bin, the metals contained within them could be lost forever. If any residents have any unwanted or redundant electrical items they want to dispose of, they can take them to our recycling and household waste sites.

Sims Recycling Solutions’ Richard Shaw said: “We are delighted to be working with Leicestershire County Council and DHL on this partnership which we hope will encourage people to clear out their cupboards of old, unwanted or redundant electrical items and send them for recycling rather than throwing them out in their wheelie bins.?In a major logistical operation, we will drop off and collect containers at each of the schools taking part, over the course of just five days in order that the equipment can be collected safely. The collected WEEE will be taken to our recycling plant in Daventry where the precious metals and plastics contained within it will be recovered and sold on to manufacturers for re-use.”

Karl Greig, general manager WEEE operations at DHL Envirosolutions, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage children to take part in recycling and for them to learn what WEEE is and what can be recycled. This innovative project supports the council’s wider environmental objective of maximising recycling, and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.”

For more on the county’s recycling and household waste sites visit: www.leics.gov.uk/recycling_household_waste_sites

Councillors Howard Midgley Chairman of Syston Town Council, and Josie Branston met with staff and students at Wreake Valley to start the work of a student panel, as can be seen in hte picture above. They explained the work of the Town Council in the context of local government, and discussed any immediate concerns. Students were aged 14 to17 and came up with a variety of concerns, such as the range of shops in Syston, for example they wondered if Costa would be prepared to open up, and the state of the toilets. However, the students were very positive, and finished with the aim of collecting ideas for the next meeting, due to be held in May.

Before that meeting Councillor Midgely has arranged to meet with Helen Myles, a detached youth worker, and students on 30th April in Central Park in order to listen to their concerns and ideas about the provision of facilities on the park.

At St Peter and St Paul Church of England Primary School the two Early Years Foundation Stage classes took part in the annual Easter Bonnet Parade.

In the recent Ofsted report the Early Years Foundation Stage is noted as a strength of the school. The children and their parents had worked together to make an excellent range of bonnets. The children paraded round the school showing other year groups their bonnets on the way to the hall; where they treated their parents by singing three Easter songs accompanied by the Year one children.

As part of Science Week, the Ratcliffe College Junior School enjoyed a visit from the Mad Scientists who held an energetic assembly followed by a series of classroom workshops, as shown in the picture above. The classrooms were filled with mysterious clouds, experiments with collapsing coke cans and some children enjoyed a ride on a leaf blower powered hovercraft. A day that sparked much enthusiasm and questions from pupils and staff alike! Mr Lloyd, Headmaster, reported that he had “never witnessed such excitement generated by scientific experiments and exploration of all kinds – learning at its very best! Well done to all those involved.”

The Laurels Nursery School has a well established reputation in the local area for providing loving childcare and preschool education for babies and young children and the owners are extremely proud of their amazing long standing staff team. As the celebrations to mark their 15th year were in full swing on Friday 20th April, the children enjoyed fun and games followed by a traditional birthday tea. Davina, the Nursery Chef, presented the children with a beautifully decorated birthday cake for everyone to share.
The Manager, Sarah Thompson, who herself has been with the Nursery since it opened commented “I joined The Laurels right at the beginning and have so many happy memories over the last 15 years. I know the owners want to join me in thanking parents and their children, past and present, for supporting us and making The Laurels the thriving success it is today. Our staff team also deserve sincere thanks as they work tirelessly and consistently to make sure the babies and young children receive the very best care and education on a daily basis.”
Marie Collins, a parent said “Since my daughter started at The Laurels nearly four years ago she has loved going everyday. There has not been a single day when she has said that she didn’t want to go, in fact it always comes as a disappointment when it is not a ‘nursery day’! My son has followed this pattern and waves me off with smiles everyday and seems reluctant to come home at the end!
The friendly staff and ethos of the place fills me with confidence and reassurance as I know they will have a stimulating and fun-filled day.
After recently moving house it made sense for me to consider moving my children to a nursery closer by, however, after visiting several other nurseries I quickly realised that, in my opinion, no other nursery came close to matching the high quality of care, activities, resources and expert staff offered at The Laurels.
My daughter leaves The Laurels to go to school this summer and she has been set up exceptionally well by her nursery years, for which I will always be very grateful.”

Mark Hedley, since 1996, has been running holiday soccer schools in Syston for boys and girls of all abilities. He has also worked in many of the local schools providing after school football sessions, dinner time clubs, PE lessons and football birthday parties.

In 1996, Mark was working for Leicester City Council under the banner of Saffron Soccer Schools, followed by a move to Peterborough United F.C. and then finally starting his own business, Mark Hedley Soccer Schools back in 2002.

Marks football history was brought up in Leicester playing for local clubs, Birstall CC, Anstey Swifts and representing Beaumont Leys School, Leicester Boys and the County Squad. In 1991, at 16 years old, he went to play professionally at Chesterfield F.C. when his career was cut short by a series of bad injuries.

He then passed his first coaching award and went into full time coaching, but only in football. Mark holds several qualifications in different sports but football has always been his main passion, having also worked for our local club Leicester City F.C. for nine seasons in the Academy department with the elite young players who were preparing to becoming professional players themselves.

Celebrating his 15th year of providing sport in Syston, Mark will once again be running soccer schools at the Syston Rugby F.C. on Barkby Road, Queniborough during the first week of Easter, Monday to Thursday 2nd to 5th April for five to 13 year olds from 9.30am to 3.00pm daily. This will be followed by an evening development session and all summer camps in the area.

For more information please call Mark on 0116 276 1560, email markhedleysoccer@googlemail.com or go to www.markhedleysoccer.co.uk

Woodlands Day Nursery Syston

There has been a great deal of sawing, hammering and pipe laying at The Gables on Melton Road recently and, soon, a new Day Nursery will be opening its doors to welcome children and their families from Syston and the surrounding areas.

It is the second nursery for owners Robin Batten and Katey Lester with their other Woodlands Day Nursery, being opened ten years ago in Birstall. Katey Lester said, “Renovating The Gables has been an extremely exciting project. There have been many challenges along the way but we consider ourselves privileged to be involved in restoring this beautiful listed building. We chose a very reputable local building contractor, Ian Harris, and both he and his skilled team have taken great care to preserve the many lovely and historical features of the Gables. In fact, they are proud to have renovated an important building in their own community”.

The Gables has had many identities over the years, including a GP practice, private house and most recently, a residential care home. It’s latest re-invention as a children’s day nursery will hopefully be completed some time in May and it has already attracted many local families who are keen to register.

Katey Lester is happy at the growing interest in the nursery, “We have received a great number of enquiries from families wanting to register their children. Syston is already blessed with excellent preschools and nurseries but the town is a growth area and we hope to add to, and complement, the range of childcare options available to local families whilst also providing employment opportunities. Our other nursery, Woodlands, has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and we will strive for no less here at The Gables in Syston”.

However, the site is not only home to a day nursery. Robin and Katey have also been very busy building a separate Osteopathy Clinic and they are very pleased that this venture is also very nearly completed. Robin Batten, a qualified osteopath, will be developing a multi disciplinary practice to offer holistic care for his patients. Robin believes that Osteopathy is an increasingly important area of healthcare, now widely recognized by the NHS, and he said, “Total wellbeing is dependent upon many things. I treat many muscular skeletal problems caused by accidents, sports injuries, poor posture, repetitive strain, arthritis and so on and often recovery requires a combination of sound, accurate diagnosis of the primary cause with an injury specific treatment plan. I am thrilled to open my practice in Syston and, as it is in such an accessible location, I hope that it can be of benefit to all”.

Both Katey and Robin would like to invite everyone to the grand opening of The Gables Day Nursery and Syston Osteopathy Centre. “We cannot wait to get going,” said Robin, “and we are planning a great opening celebration. We hope that the community of Syston will join us in raising a glass to The Gables”.

Look in the next issue of the Syston Town News for details of the opening event.
